Yup he is correct, the original gearbox I had on my 99 AGU was the old style connectors. It is pretty much a gearbox from the mk3 on the very first mk4s.

You will have to spend lots of time fiddling about with the adjustment, and possibly buy new plastic/rubber parts for the shifter mechanism to remove any slack.

Alternatively you can buy a newer shifter mechanism with newer connectors and the appropriate shift tower to go with it. It is pretty easy to lift out the shift tower from the gearbox however you have to remove the exhaust to replace the shifter mechanism

Also could there be a possibility that little or no gear box oil could cause the same problems I haven't checked yet but it's on my to do list

Unless it has been upgraded it will be a dual mass.

I wouldn't think that the oil would cause the issue however it wouldn't harm changing it considering its age.

cool thanks ive tryed adjusting the cables and no luck ive noticed a lot of slop on all the parts so going to replace all the bushings ect with new i dont fancy getiing a second hand unit from a newer golf as you can not garentee that it will be any better than what ive already tbh

well went into vw today to price up some bits and asked the guys in there and they said get a second hand gear box as they seem to think that the sincro mesh has gone even tho they havnt seen the car at all is this lickly to be the case ? they also said the gear box code is ECW cant really see how the gear box has gone as my last golf was on over 200 thou on the original gear box
