Title: Where does this go ?
Post by: Mk1golfnoob on 07 June 2013, 19:17
Won't let me upload a pic from ipad but while the car was on a ramp, a broken wire from the right hand side of the steering column on the rack was found, my horn still doesn't work so just want to know where this goes ?
Thanks

If its the brown wire that is what earths the rack to the steering column and provides the earth path to the horns that's why they don't probably work. Remember the earth is switched and the horns are permanent live. Also on old twin horn set up they suffer from current drain as the wires get older. So you find sometimes unplugging one usually results in the other sounding off ok.

the pic shows the wire in place on the left hand side via the blue arrow.

Finally fixed, thanks for the help guys, would just like to say most golf horns stop working because of 1 thing. But no, not mine,
Took the steering wheel rubber off and found the earth wire was not connected to the steering column, secondly I fixed the broken wire as shown in the previous post, and then I had ground at the horn and it still doesn't work. Unplugged 1 and now it works, what a nightmare of a job.
Chuffed now tho :)

easy fix lol.

I had mine horn sounding every time I turned a corner....got loads of funny looks and random waves..

it was the tab under the horn ring bent out of shape and shorting against the indicator assembly lower screw.
Straighten tab and place some insulation tape over the screw head happy days.

You could always put another relay in and power both horns from the battery.

I'm fine, everything on the car works now so it's staying as it is as I've just bought a 1973 ford escort 3 door to restore :) golf will be my daily
