Transfer all the running gear over. Suchnas the engine, gearbox not sure if loom is same. Also you will need the hydro clutch parts aswel. What year are both cars? As the 8v gti after 95 have some hydro bit on the clutch pedal so you wont need to change the pedal but anything before that year you MIGHT have to change the pedal. Il wait for someone to correct me
Also you will need the rear engine mount from the vr as the 8v gti is different.
Is it an 8v gti?

Im doing a vr into my 8v gti, as said above if its after 95 then the hole is already in the bulkhead for the m/c and you dont need a different pedalbox, again depending on the years the looms will be different, after 95 is a single piece engine and headlight loom and pre 95 they are seperate.

If you want sound over performace go for it. After test driving a few so glad I did not go down that route.

8v gearbox is cable clutch on all i believe and gearbox is weak.I would not use an 8v box on a vr myself even if it did fit.Clutch is also smaller and weaker.

True say this. They are VERY weak.
The diff tend to go pop on the dfq's (8v gti boxes)

8v box will not fit a VR6 due to the bellhousing shape.

I blew an 8v box to bits last Autumn, and I mean bits
16v aint much better, nothing to do with the box just the riveted diff VW tended to use.
Killed all types through snatching gears and shearing the rivets off

You can get a kit to replace the rivets with bolts, much better in the long run.

I remember this, didn't you redline it from cold out of your work car park?

Would it not be easier/cheaper to buy a decent vr6? Plus if you're wanting performance from the swap id spend that little bit more money and time and put a 1.8t in instead the vr6 lump weighs a ton. Thats my opinion though

Buying is always easier however if you have a rust free and tidy shell then it can make more sense to convert.

VR is also a lot easier than 1.8t.
