My 8v GTI has developed a loud and annoying rattle between 2.5 and 3.5k rpm. I've had a listen but can't place where it may be coming from! I have uploaded a vid to photobucket, any suggestions as to where to look?

Thanks all!

Most likely going to be an exhaust heatshield. Prob the down pipe shield. People tend to rip them off but they are there for a reason
-
put a big jubilee clip round the bottom of the downpipe heat sheild
-
yeh ill say heat sheild. although mine wasnt the manifold but from there back
jack the car up nice and high and look under it
-
More than likely the exhaust downpipe heat-shield, I had to rip mine out as it was past salvageable unfortunately..
-
Okay thanks guys will take a look over the weekend when I get the car back from the garage!

wht dont you ask the garage ppl to have a look? :undecided:

Had that on my 8v since I got it, whilst changing the lambda on the ramp noticed the heat shield on the downpipe was loose (as others have said above).
You can put a jubilee around the bottom or if you have access to a welder, just grind it back a bit and weld it in place. Mines all sorted now.

45mpg  your not driving it right!! Lol
-
Lol take it easy usually on the drive to work with petrol prices as they are!
-
Right update to this...I had a good look under the car and could see no loose heat shields. The shield around the downpipe seemed solid, no movement, but I put a big jubilee clip around it anyway, near where it joins the catalyst. However, the noise has not improved at all
Looking under the bonnet and revving the engine it's obvious the noise is coming from the exhaust manifold/ downpipe area so I'm thinking I might just start replacing bits....downpipe first on the list. Are they easy to change?
-
Is it not the headshield on the rear engine side mount?
-
Don't know...where exactly is this? It's an 8v GTI by the way!
-
If that mount has been changed, it may have been removed already..
I remember correctly my 8 valve had a heatshield on the manifold as it comes off the motor on the drivers side under the inlet manifold.
There was also another heat shield, a weak little one over the engine mount down that side which I had to remove as it was flapping about making one hell of a noise.
-
Ah right cool I will take a look tonight, thanks for the tip! (
As far as I know mounts have never been changed, hope it's this!
-
There is another heatshield under that CAT!
-
No heatshield on the cat, must have been removed by a previous owner.
Sound is definitely coming from the engine bay near the rear of the engine.
-
On 16v's there is an cast aluminium heatshield which rattles like f**k! But dunno if yours will have the same
-
Couldn't see any heatshield around the engine mount, this has got me slightly stumped, can't see how I'm gonna fix it without removing throttle body, injectors, inlet and exhaust manifolds to get a proper look!
-
Try hitting any metal items with a rubber mallet and listen for a rattle? :undecided:
-
Hah might be a good shout!

No the one I am on about is above the exhaust manifold
-
Above the exhaust mani, but below the inlet, I saw what looked to be an ali box which is bolted to the head and shielding something, not sure what, and it's a pain to get to.

That'll be the one!
The ally breaks around the bolt holes.

Sweet I'll have a good look at that then tonight...don't see what else it could be!
