I'm looking to smooth my airbox and swiss cheese it but not sure what you guys would advise. I've been looking all evening at the pros and cons and I'm not sure if it's a good idea or a bad idea. Some people highly reccomend doing it and the ones who don't have chosen other routes that I can't afford right now.
I've got a pipercross panel filter at the moment in a non smoothed big standard box.
Any suggestions that don't involve a lot of money would be helpful

in my opinion, stick with what you`ve got.
but if you can`t decide, grab a daisy from the garden and start picking the petals off until you come to a conclusion..

I just smoothed mine out, then added a couple of holes at the bottom, more to keep any possible water out than anything else though.

Just smooth it out or get a cone and stop putting up stuff that can be put in another thread you have posted

Iv just purchased another box because I went too wild with a blade.
Personally I would run the OE intake that comes from behind the headlight.
Then take a hack saw to the box.
Open it up around the intake, about 3 ribs per side (you'll see what I mean).
This will open the box up to breath more freely, but still allow all the airflow from the OE intake. It also sounds good.
Don't drill holes anywhere else, it will just draw in warm air.
The standard box isn't restrictive as such, but sucking what it needs from behind the headlight is.

I tested mine through VCDS. Maf mg/s.
OE set up
Snorkel removed
Snorkel in place box opened up around snorkel
All showed an increase of MAF readings
