Title: Steering gaiter and fuel pump - anyone replaced them?
Post by: barleymagrew on 08 August 2005, 15:35: Just got my Mk2 back from MOT.

I need to replace the rubber gaiter on the drive shaft and also the fuel pump is leaking. (Its the tyep in a box under the drivers side rear door.)

Has anyone replaced either of these. How difficult are they to do?

Post by: Judderi on 08 August 2005, 15:39: The CV boot is easy enough to do. As for the fuel pump well it depends where its leaking from. Mine was leaking from the line that goes from the pump to the filter so i replaced that. When he says the pump he could mean the pump or filter or acumulator or one of the lines connecting all of these. Its not usually an easy job as they get very rusted and seized, plus lying on your back doing it isnt ideal.

Also, I think the leak is coming from the pump itself leaking out through the plastic box housing. Is there anywhere that sells seals for this?

Post by: Judderi on 09 August 2005, 09:34: No you dont need special tools. Once you have the driveshaft out of the hub, you just whack the CV till it pops off the driveshaft then replace the boot. And as the haynes says refiting is a reversal of removal.Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â :grin:

As for the fuel pump im not sure about new seals. You really gotta find the leak 1st. I took some pics of my pump last night while i was under the car for you.

Parts Left to Right are 1. Filter 2. Pump 3. Acumulator

The cleanest copper looking pipe is the one i had to replace due to a leak.

Post by: rubjonny on 09 August 2005, 13:48: To do CV boot you need the car on the ground with the centre cap reoff from the wheel so you can get to the hub nut. Then you get a LOOOOOONG breaker bar on the nut and be prepared to unleash all the harsh language you know of :grin:

You may end up thinking its a reverse thread but it isn't, just super turbo nutter b@stard tight!

Once off then you need to jack the car up & remove the wheel. The easiest way forward is to mark the position of the bearing carrier on the suspension strut, remove the two bolts and then pull the shaft out. Problem with this way is its possible to move your wheel alignment hence the reason for marking it really carefully for reassmbly :)

Once hanging loose, bash the rear of the CV joint firmly till it comes off, ideally you want a piece of wood to stop you damaging it but I managed without. Then its just a case of getting the new boot on and the clips done up tight enough, but they are a real nightmare!

Post by: SimonJ on 09 August 2005, 14:38: dont know if this helps but i replaced the fuel pump the other night and fuel was leaking from the sealing ring before I tightened the screws on the mounting plate, so maybe you could check the screws are tight, or maybe you need a new sealing ring. I dont know where fuel is leaking from on yours though, good luck

Post by: SimonJ on 09 August 2005, 14:50: If it is the sealing ring that leaks, and u cant buy them separately(?) u can have my old one that worked fine on the pump i just replaced if u need it, i replaced the pump because it was buzzing loudly, it's almost silent now though :cool:

Thank you all for your help. The photos were really helpful. The leak is coming from the pump seal. In case its useful for you guys, I've sourced all the idividual bits like the 3 retaining screws and seal itself from Volkswagen in Solihull. Really helpful - even faxed through the parts diagram to make sure they were ordering the right bits. Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£3 for the seal, 35p each for the screws. - Beats Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£50+ for a new pump!

As far as the drive shaft gaiter - do you think its worht me trying or not. Given the likelyhood of rusted bolts etc. You keep calling it the CV boot is it the same thing?

Post by: SimonJ on 09 August 2005, 15:53: cv boot and driveshaft gaitor are the same thing. I have a split cv boot, ive never done it before and im getting a garage to do it, i was very tempted to have a go myself but dont want to get stuck.

If ur taking the fuel pump out have something ready to catch the fuel that comes out of the resevoir when u pull it out. I dont know if u can depressurise the system first but i followed haynes manual and that didn't say anything about it
