Title: gti 1.8t 180 slow at 2k rpm?
Post by: lighters on 28 May 2013, 23:38
Drove my golf for the first time today - LOVED IT!

First off the car is apparently remapped to 180 from 150 and I quite believe it but not 100% sure.
Included some pics as I think theres an air filter also. (Carbonio thing?)

Its extremely fast top end, 3k rev onwards it keeps pulling all the way to the redline but anywhere below 3k (especially 2/2.5k) revs it seems extremely slow and delayed like a turbo diesel would. It worries me a little as I would be cautious pulling out in 2nd with the revs low as theres a slight delay then a big boost in speed and its not as pokey as I would expect a petrol to be. Is this turbo lag or something completely different, its slower than my brother fiat doblo taxi (His words lol) bottom end ofcourse.

I came from an mgz120 and saxo vts and both are considerably faster low end at picking up.

Could it be due to the type of dump valve (GFB) that is fitted as the noise is fairly loud and would it make lower end a lot faster if I got a forge instead of the current one i have running?

How much could I expect to get for that dump valve thats currently on?

That car is extremely responsive and the clutch is very smooth (brand new) it just seems like theres a delay between power as if it builds up anywhere from 2krpm or is this normal and cant be sorted without a big budget?

it`ll be fine as soon as you get used to it, just keep the revs up when you need to pull off ect.
get rid of that DV and get a forge..

I understand what you mean about keeping the revs high but sometimes its not practical to show down to 1st at a roundabout to pull out when moving around 5-10pmh. I should be in 2nd and it just wouldnt pick up quick enough!

Wondering if its normal for these cars or if its the dump valve causing the delay?

Other than that the cars awesome! Speaking of dumpvalves though, what gains am I likely to see from the forge 007/008 that everyone rates so much?

As much fun as the dumpvalve is, I would much prefer no noise and performance.

EDIT - Its similiar to this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Bkot58r_e5U#t=13s

Say I put my foot to the floor at 24 seconds I would get a delay where it would move etc

its not so much about gain with the 007p, it`s just that the ECU/engine preferes them. the car should run smoother with it.
i doubt its the dump valve causing the delay though it would be a factor i suppose  :undecided:
i do find myself that when in second at about 5-10 mph it`s not got enough grunt to pull. you would want to be in 1st if you want a fast pull away from that speed, other than that, like i said, give it some revs and ride the clutch a little, but thats not good.
personally i think you just need time to get used to the car.

Cheers for the quick reply :) No doubt I do need to get used to the car but I love how quick it is after 3k revs!

I am due a service in 900miles so while so any advice on uprated stuff/filters or whatever to get done while its being put through?

Is it worth running super unealed/vpower/nitro etc on these cars if remapped?

you could run shelll v-power if you wanted, but no real need at this stage. keep your carbonio, they seem to be ok, but if you want quiet, then go for standard airbox with piperx panel filter.

Is that video of your car?
If so there is something seriously wrong, you seem to be boosting up and over 22 psi which on a stage one is NOT good for stock parts. You should also get rid of that blowoff valve asap! The 1.8t engine does not work well with a blowoff they require a recurc my car is unmapped and althou is is not as fast as yours after 3k its certainly faster off the mark and i dont have to turn asr off ;)

Id also check for any boostleaks and get it scanned for any errors.
Also a mapped car should be run on 99 octanine fuel as it runs alot better however it isnt required.

Sorry thats not my car at all, thats just the best way I can describe it when I try accelerate fast in 2nd gear from 5-10mph theres a delay up until 3k revs then its fast. It's just not very nippy like my mgzr120 or saxo vts. They were really fast at pulling out. Granted they are lighter but I wasnt expecting such a difference low end without the revs.

the golf is a bit of a lard ass compared to the mg or vts.
but then the mg and saxo arent as tunable.

If it was me, first thing id be doing is ripping out that dv and replacing it with a forge 007/008 witb yellow spring u wont beleave the difference.

Your turbo is in the process of spooling up and doesnt hit its stride until about 3k rpm

My suggestion is dont floor the accelerator; feed the throttle in and you'll find the car much more responsive

You've come from N/A cars which have near instant throttle response

Not sure if I can justify £130 for another dumpvalve if theres no noticable difference.

Unsure if its remapped so would yellow spring still be ok?

Not to sound negative or anything but for all I know the one on currently could be better than a forge or is that simply not possible?

if its not mapped it will be slow as hell. Save up and get a forge dv with a yellow spring and a set of ngk platinum spark plugs , if your cars a AGU it will love them.

Judging by the pics you posted it looks as useful as a chocolate teapot

The Forge item is tried and tested and 99% of tuners and owners will recommend that you fit one whether your car is standard or not

Correct, the car is an AGU. which is the better forge to get 007 or 008? Any other fitments I will need? Know absolutely nothing about cars! uncle handles all that ha.

personally i`d go with whatever you can find for the cheapest out of the 007 and 008.
as long as its in good working order, thats all you need to worry about!

008 is just the replacement of the 007. It reacts slightly quicker but in real terms you won't notice much difference between the two. I've got a 008 on mine because I saw it on sale last year, plus you get all the coloured springs with it to change as you upgrade your car.

Sounds good news, ok so going to try grab one off ebay unless anyone has direct links to fairly priced ones under £100?

Can anyone identify from the pics my current dumpvalve and any idea how much I could get 2nd hand?

just stick your old one on ebay, it`ll sell for whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
i would guess about £20-30, but thats just a guess.

Sounds like a plan, I will let you know how I get on! My standard radio is also terrible! it can barely pickup/keep a solid signal. Could it be the aerial? seemed plugged in when I tried it but the radio that comes as stock isnt the best.

Thinking of an upgrade? Ideas?
