Title: Help needed ignition/fuel pump problems
Post by: Joshp89 on 27 May 2013, 21:36
Hey I've recently purchased a 1990 mk2 golf gti 16v, it's had starting problems from the day I owned it. Always knew it needed a new dizzy cap, arm, plugs, leads and a new battery. All these parts have been replaced  recently. I've also had to tighten up the fuel pump underneath the car as it was spilling fuel out at an alarm rate! After tightening up the fuel pump the car has refused to start altogether, wouldn't even turn over at first but after having all the ignition parts changed it will turn over but won't start. Any advice on wether this is caused by ignition or by the tightening up of the fuel pump will be greatly appreciated. A friend of mine who's a mechanic has said I may have a drain on the battery could this be caused by replacing the stereo as I've also done this recently? After charging the batt up it still turns over but won't start.

Thanks in advance I'm getting desperate here

When you turn the ign on can you hear the main pump under the car prime for about 2 secs?

Thanks for the reply, yeah fuel pump does make a sound when gin is turned. I get a batt light fully lit and an oil light come on. Car turns over but won't start at all.

Does it push start?
I would take fuses out one by one and see where this possible drain is coming from?
Stick old stuff back on and see if it works if it did before possible new stuff is wrong?
Change the fuel filter regardless if its had leaks possible air locks have now got in the lines start going back to basics!

It wouldn't start with the old stuff on so changed it to the new and it still won't start. Got a mechanic coming to look now hopefully he knows the score

Still no luck with getting it started, tried removing something to do with fuel near the air filter turned over the ignition and checked if there was fuel going thru which there was. Also checked the leads to see if they were in correct order.  Any pictures of how they fit correctly into the dizzy? I'm doing this without the help of my mechanic freind now. Cheers

I looked on google images for the ht lead order. Starting from the top and going anti clockwise it goes 1 - 2 - 4 - 3
