Title: Small Area of Peeling Lacquer on Bonnet? Can I DIY or bodyshop?
Post by: dezire2003 on 08 August 2005, 13:42
I found a spot (fist size) of peeling lacquer on my met blue Golf Mk2 the other day. I think some bird crap had cause it.
Does anyone know how to sort this out - Can I rub down the area and re-lacquer it? Or how much work/cost is involved for a body shop to sort this out? Will they have to repaint the whole bonnet or not?

Much appreciated :)

I've got a similar situation with my new ride ... the bonnet has a few stone chips and the lacquer problem plus the scuttle has some rust starting.

If the lacquer has started to peel it's a pretty sure sign of some poor repair work I'm afraid.

I'm paying around £500 for the bonnet to be re-painted from scratch - top of the wings blown in - the metal insert on the front grill - and finally the scuttle repaired and painted. That a fair bit for a job like this I've been told, but if you want a good colour match and quality job you can't scrimp really!

So the next question is what's the budget and what results do you want?

I'd say get a quote from a good bodyshop and take it from there ...

The bonnet nor the car has never been repaired - it's all original (believe me, I know).

The reason for the peel is a lump of bird sh!te left on my bonnet for a few weeks (silly me!).

£500!!! That's an awful lot for a bonnet repray mate! Can the bonnet not be rubbed down and re laquered?

I could live with it but it just looks so crap, as the rest of the bodywork is fine.

best left to the bodyshop i recon. you will have to paint or laqure the whole bonnet as small patch work will stand out big time. old paint is hard to match aswel

£500 is alot of money. if you add another 500 you can get the whole car done

then again its a quality job

Update- Just phoned a few local bodyshops in Brighton, and got 2 prices for rubbing back and respraying. One said they would have to spray the top of the wings to blend in, and the other sadi that a good paint mix/match will not have to do that. Mmm.

Prices so far - £250 and £200 all in. I think this is pricey! Is it?

250 for a good mix/match quality job is about right.

Still sounds a lot though for a car worth a grand. I reakon I'll look around until I can get it down to £100 all in. I was thinking of selling it soon anyhow, but don't want to sell it looking a bit poorly.
