sad:
I have had this car for two years and had no problems, its serviced with Vw all the way through. I'm now ready to change the car and have had a problem with it over the weekend.
Its decided that i will not change gear unless the revs go over 4000.
I know this site is for GTI's, but can anyone help me on this.
I'm selling the car due to cash flow issues, and cannot afford to take it back to VW.
Quick fix if possible please.

this site is for all VW's
Auto boxes are expensive to fix. The only thing i know that can be replaced is the torque convertor on the box . The rest is specialist work

before you do anything else check the oil level follow the manual as sometimes you need to check with the engine running and at right temp

Hmm sounds to me like the gearbox has gone into some sort of sports mode .
Try removing the battery connections and leaving it for a couple of hours, to see if anything resets .

I know Audi auto's had problems with the air flow meters. They would give no other indication of problems (not even fault codes) but they wouldn;t change gear until really high!
I'm pretty sure it'll be the same engines and box's so if you know someone else with the same car, it might be worth a swap of the air flow meter!!!

Wild and random guess here, but it could be due to a vacuum leak. I'm pretty sure the MK2 auto had a vacuum connection to the carb. I could be and assume I am completely, utterly and totally wrong though
Worth a look though eh :)

Most likely going to be oil level, could be worse- mine used to revert into 'limp' mode whereby you could only use 2nd gear!
35 mph at 4500rpm all the way home then.....
