Title: Need help diagnosing clutch or gearbox problem!
Post by: b_boy02 on 24 May 2013, 14:24
Hello!

I have noticed recently that my 16v is resisting me changing gear, it kinda feels like I can't push the gear stick into the gate without a bit of force and sometimes it is hard to find the gate at all! I have also noticed today that it is crunching a tiny bit into third sometimes. It has crunched into reverse since I have had it.

I am unsure if this is a gearbox, clutch cable, or clutch itself problem...

Does anyone have any ideas??

Thanks for your help.

How many miles has it covered?

16v doent have a cable, sounds like the clutch isn't clearing ,does it go into the gears easy when the engine isn't running,my 16v box is nearly at 180k and still sweet even being coupled to a 20v .

Could be the nylon ball at the base of the shift tower, you can get a kit to repair it.

Yes Screech it does change gear easy when the engine is not running...what would that point to?

Gav, I had a look at the shift tower yesterday and all seems fine visually and if you change by hand in the engine bay. Don't know how I would tell if it is this nylon ball thing though!?

16v, VR6 & TDI gearsticks don't have a nylon pivot ball base like the 8v rod change set up.

Indeed, Cable selection and hydro clutch.

Could be cable issue, could be slave, you need to rule these out before you start thinking about the box itself

If it was clutch it would slip.

My thoughts are problem between gear stick and clutch

Worn out plastic selector levers on the shift tower?

Well I had a look where the rods meet the tower and the attachments look and feel solid. The clutch has never slipped, tried full gas into 5th up a hill and also letting it pull against the handbrake whilst parked and no slippage.

Someone suggested it could be the springs within the clutch not disengaging the plate correctly but I really don't want to go about replacing perfectly good working parts on the off chance they might be at fault!

Check your clutch hydraulic system for leaks, could be air in the system, does it change smoother if you do a couple or three  quick presses (pump up) and then change gear?
The clearing thing ,when in first with clutch engaged does the car creep forward any?

I will try pumping the clutch today and see what happens.

With the clutch pedal pushed right in it does not creep in first, with the clutch pedal right out, as in first fully engaged, it does.
