Title: mk4 1.8t broke down on the way to work this morning.
Post by: thatwillis on 24 May 2013, 11:44
Hi guys.

Driving my golf to work this morning I noticed it got a little lumpy then a min later the revs dropped and it cut out. It now won't start. I'm now at work so I cant check for codes. Would anyone have an idea off the top of their heads what it might be? It still turns over but wont take.

Much appreciated
Willis

check the basics first, fuelling, spark etc
when you say turns over do you mean it just sounds like its cranking or does it fire up?
if just cranking then its most likely fuelling or ignition so plugs (ignition amp if it has one) etc

Thanks for your help. Yeah its an AGU. How easy is the ignition amp to change? Expensive part?

I'll scan it when I get back from work. Whats the code likely to say if it is the ignition amp?

it`s piss easy to change, its bolted to the side of your airbox with 2 10mm (iirc) bolts and two plugs clipped onto it.
not sure if a new one will come with heat transfer compound but you can get that from maplins cheaply..

Crank sensor?

How would I check that?

I've done a scan and no codes are coming up at all. Would people still think it the ignition amp?

Is this the correction part?

Ok so i fixed it...

After looking up the part I recognised it from when I cleaned out my air filter. I then remember a clip was missing when i last reconnected it.

Upon checking the ignition amp one of the clips was unplugged

oops! Must have come off going over the speed bumps. I'm making a new clip now!
