Title: Discover Navigation System screen
Post by: matchboy on 23 May 2013, 13:47
Has anyone found any pics of the Discover Navigation System screen, ie. the 5.8" screen?  All the GTI's I've seen (pics not in person!!) have had the DNS Pro ie. the 8" screen.

Basically, what I'm after is a direct picture comparison to see what the 'normal' screen will looks like.  Particularly as I assume all the demos will have the 8" screen.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I too would really like to see a side-by-side comparison (8" & 5.8" screens). I'm too tight to stump up £1,750 Discover Pro when I have a £99 TomTom (not quite the same I know, but you get the gist).

Does the 5.8" screen have the proximity sensor?

Excellent, thanks!!  I'm happy with that size screen!

As an aside, what a shame you can't have that rising blue as a colour - looks amazing!

The smaller one has the proximity sensor too.
I have ordered the smaller Nav system for my GTI and I'm expecting delivery in the next week or 10 days. I'll post a few pics of the navigation when I see it.

......and sexual innuendos aside , as I understand it the main differences between the Discover Media and Nav Pro are:

Discover Media

5.8" Touch Screen with 400x 240 Pixel Resolution
2D/2.5D map navigation (Europe) with voice control
CD drive MP3/WMA
Music playback from MP3, WMA, AAC files with title display from SD and AUX IN
USB, AUX-IN, SD (2x) (Aux and USB require optional connection cable) - only 1 SD card available for music, other SD card contains Map data
DAB, FM and AM radio reception
4x20 watt output (front and rear speakers)
Bluetooth connection for phone and media (HFP, A2DP *, AVRCP **)

Discover Nav Pro

8.0" touchscreen colour display with 800 x 480 Resolution
Faster 3d Display Engine (graphics Chip)
3D map navigation (Europe) with advanced voice control
DVD Audio/Video
Film playback from AVI, MPEG, Divx, H.246, and DVD from SD, USB and DVD data carriers
Music playback from MP3, WMA, AAC files with title display from SD and AUX IN
Gracenote database, podcast playback and jukebox
Internal 64GB memory as SSD - (Solid State Hard Drive)  - 30GB can be used for music, etc.
USB, AUX-IN, SD (2x) - both SD cards available at all times (maps are stored on the HDD)
DAB, FM and AM radio reception
4x20 watt output (front and rear speakers)
Bluetooth connection for phone and media (HFP, A2DP *, AVRCP **)

LOL.

Anyway, technically I think its something like an extra 7 square inches, since its area we're talking about rather than length.  And its an extra £990 rather than £1725 because the basic nav isn't free. :nerd:  I agree its pricey, very pricey even.  However, it was something I really wanted and didn't even question adding, along with the DSG.  Controversial I know!...but that's what I wanted.

That said, I wish they'd stop overcharging for things like sat nav.  The added functionality over the non sat nav is no more than you'd get for a mid range TomTom or Garmin unit.  So really what I'm paying for is the integration and the large screen, and its costing about 5x what it seems like its worth.  I suppose TomTom ship many times larger volume though, and that is where the cost comes down.

Post by: JoeGTI on 23 May 2013, 17:51
Agreed... manufacturers (well VW anyway) charge an insane premium for Sat Nav systems. It's crazy, considering every £50 smartphone has some kind of NAV / GPS built in these days!

I have the RNS 510 in my current car and while it looks great and the clean integration is lovely, the Google Maps on my iPhone is probably a more reliable source of maps! The good thing is, my RNS still attracts a premium 2nd hand, so I can take that out of the car before trading in and easily sell it separately.

To be honest, me adding even the basic Sat Nav was a was a late considered addition.  I rarely use nav anyway, but appreciate the integration.  The size of the screen is irrelevant to me - it's larger than my TomTom, and not something I'll spend my time staring at while driving!

Exactly the same for me.  I don't use sat nav that often, but i thought it was nice to have it but not at the Pro prices.  Plus, looking at the spec comparison posted earlier, the extra stuff is all add ons that i won't ever use.  Saying that, the bigger screen does look good

If you could have had the bigger screen without Nav or SSD for a lower price I might have gone for it.

Aye, it's features for the sake of it to charge an extra grand to help justify the larger screen that costs peanuts anyway!  Does look nice, but not at that price.

As sad as it may seem,  this is what I spent my evening investigating last night!  There is another good comparison pic at:

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?138796-Golf-MK7-Anyone-quot-SEEN-quot-the-standard-SAT-NAV-yet-!!&p=757043#post757043 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?138796-Golf-MK7-Anyone-quot-SEEN-quot-the-standard-SAT-NAV-yet-!!&p=757043#post757043)

I would have loved to have had an option just for the bigger screen.  Not interested in the sat nav or DVD player stuff but along with the larger screen size you are getting double the resolution - which I imagine will make a big difference for things like the reverse camera.

Especially as the original one is smaller than the RCD510's screen, there is the 20% cost cutting.

I'll tell you what does bother me though.  Why does the on button rotate with the volume control?  That's just stupid and makes it look like the button is put on upside down at the factory or something.  Could they not have made a mechanism where the side rotates but the face remains upright like every other button of this kind anywhere in the world ever...?.

The RCD 510 (not nav) is the same.  I don't use the volume button to change the volume on the unit as the symbol on the button rotates with the button.  This clashes with my OCD as it makes the car look untidy.  So I use the steering wheel exclusively.

If Citroen can engineer a steering wheel where the centre bit with all of its buttons stays in the same orientation, why can't VW do the same with a volume button?

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I'm so glad that I am not the only person that gets extremely annoyed with this!! I've had two Passats, currently in an Audi A3, and got a Golf on order to replace it. This has always driven me mad and my Mrs, my boss, and any other passenger in my car take the micky something rotten as I have banned the use of the volume dial, and rely solely on the steering wheel controls. I can't stand it when the power symbol is not upright. To make matters worse, in the A3 it doesn't actually settle completely straight, it stops in a groove either slightly to the left or slightly to the right.

I think I need help

No, I just mean on a 5 spoke wheel in general, if one has a spoke at 12 o' clock, and the other wheel at 1 o' clock, so different orientations on the same side!
