Title: Chip Express
Post by: Hawaii-Five-O on 22 May 2013, 21:42
Dead simple question.

Are Chip Express diesel tuning boxes any good, or should you avoid at all costs? If so, why?

Thx

Have had 2 Chipexpress boxes brilliant great service as regards delivery and when asking questions.Worth checking reviews on the web.

Personally I would avoid any of the plug in box modifications.

I have already registered my interest with our very own "The Doc" at Carbon Tuning.

I would rather wait for a remap that is backed up with real research and development. that can be tailored to your own requirements.

tuning boxes tend to do little more than increase boost and this worries me regarding long term reliability.

I believe revo / superchips bluefin /apr will also produce remaps for the mk7 that can be removed prior to service and then reloaded again afterwards.

I've had all my VW's remapped and never had any problems when it comes to service. i dont even bother taking it off.

I do recall my APR map getting wiped after VW applied a software update to my Edition 30 but awesome Gti store just added the remap again at no charge.

Your experience really sounds good. However a quick search on Google and lots of people say to avoid because of problems with DPF. One even said that the Chipexpress box just kids the cars ECU into thinking its cold outside so as to permanently force induction. Heck, that don't sound good  :embarrassed:

Can only comment on my own experience but living in an island of 45 square miles with a 40 mph speed limit early DPF problems were prolific on VW/Audi TDIs.After over a year mu Audi has had no such problems newer TDIs auto regenerate the DPF as far as I am aware.I did read an article recently where they rolling road tested a diesel remap against a good plug-in they found no difference in output.

It may not be a case of completely avoiding a tuning box but more the quality of the final output may not match alternatives such as live mapping on a dyno.

Some of the cheap ones on ebay are said to be nothing more than a resistor to spoof the fueling system.

The benefit of ecu mapping with a rolling road session is that it allows for tweaking and gives an indication of what your power output was before and after remapping. Results vary depending on whose Dyno you're on .

If you pick a reputable tuner they will also have knowledge of the vehicle and the maps which will be important should any problems arise with the vehicle.

The tuning box will only estimate what your output will be, and since your spending money on the item it would be nice to know how much your getting for your money?

As for a car with a DPF on an island as small as Jersey...whatever next :lipsrsealed:.
