Its just a shame these reviews come out and they are factually wrong. GTD gets 18" wheels as standard and no ones entirely sure if the soundaktor is standard in the uk.
-
Think it just demonstrates laziness and complacency as if it was me doing such a job I would realise there are people out here who will have a deep interest and would do all the necessary research for UK market before putting my name to an article - to generalise, particularly when taken from other sources and provide information as fact due to not taken the time to establish truth completely devalues the review and many you read unfortunately fall into that category.
You can readily tell a review where someone has a real passion for cars by depth of their comments and has genuinely driven the car.
Prefer video ones as at least I know it is a personal opinion from someone actually driving the car!
Looking forward most to reviews of those from here and my own! ;)

Another "review" done by someone who's just thumbed through the brochure and not even sat behind the wheel of a GTD yet. Lazy journalism with no real experience basis. They can't even be bothered to put up a non VW photo.

I'd say this is the most positive review to date.
-
In summary "The Golf GTD’s appeal operates at a higher cerebral level, and rewards drivers who recognise that you don’t need to mash the throttle to maintain a rapid pace and put a smile on your face. In other words, the GTD is a GTI for grown-ups"

It seems such a naïve trap for a journalist to instantly compare the GTD to GTI, they are such lame reads.
If someone just wanted performance there is no choice to make, it is GTI all the way!! so I would like to see the GTD compared to it's direct competition from the other brands as that would be far more interesting to me opposed to a review where it is basically the same car and where one then has a huge advantage for them to run the GTD down on - Given the Golf is car of the year and GTI has had such rave reviews and is hot hatch of choice then the GTD reviewed against it's competitors just makes so much more sense and would you imagine be standout also :)
-
Stopped reading when he said it cost more than the gti and only had 17” alloys. Maybe in Ireland but not here so pointless review.
-
Posted this yesterday.
Here is the list the GTD should be judged against: (NOT THE GTI !!!!!)
BMW 120d M Sport 181 bhp
Merc A220 AMG Sport 167 bhp
Alfa JTDM Veloce 167 bhp
Mini Cooper SD 140 bhp
Vauxhall GTC Coupe CDTi bi-turbo 192 bhp
Ford Focus TDCi 163 bhp
Seat Leon FR 184 bhp
Audi A3 2.0 TDI 184 bhp (when it comes out)
If I've missed any feel free to add.

Its probably more of a fair comparison for the Irish market because of the GTD being 2000 euro dearer than the GTI. This really means that you would need to be doing a lot more miles to justify it over the GTI. In that sense I can see why it looks less of a buy against the GTI

The GTD actually costs more in most Euro markets, maybe because they know that with significantly cheaper diesel than petrol in most European countries (except the UK) people will still pay it. Another example of VW charging what they can get away with without affecting sales.

GTDi is not going to feature on any fleet I can think of
He doesn't think too well then does he? Also its called a GTD not a GTDi...
It only gets worse:
The engine is the bigger but standard performance 2.0 litre unit that features across the Volkswagen group range
 I hope he means that Seat get it as well, because it reads like he thinks you can get the same engine in a TDI Golf...?
Best yet:
However, the problem with the diesel version of the GTi is a simple one. It suffers too much from direct comparison with the petrol version
Oh, well thanks for not perpetuating that problem then!
-
This may be a stupid question but what exactly do reviewers mean when they talk about 'feedback'. Is this something I should want from my car?!
-
Did the reviewer even drive the car? They mention a "brief drive" but don't divulge any details of it, just seems another amble through the brochure specification to determine the figure comparisons and say that tiny figurative diferences between GTI and GTD leave it way behind. Will a 26kg difference in the GTD really ruin it compared to the GTI? Sounds like yet another journalist talking sh!te about a car they haven't really tried. If they had one to try then surely they'd have taken a pic of it rather than use the Tornado Red, Wolfsburg plates LHD GTD stock photo from VW yet again. Absolute bollocks. If I were to review something I hadn't tried and gave it a bad review as a result I could be accused of libel.
-
Beats me how these cretins are in journalism. No it doesn't come with red calipers you total bell end!!

Positive review but more obviously so as Business Driver biased - Comment at end to sound acctuator and not sure I would even want this anyway as happily live without it now and kind of seems pointless?
Think have to experience in action to truly judge
Will it also be a standard UK feature? I def would not pay for it. My car due in October (know this as when lease ends on current) so it might squeeze in if standard but to be honest either way not too excited/bothered
-
I will be amazed if the UK GTD doesn't have the sound actuator - this isn't some new device - they're been routinely putting it onto the 170TDI VWs since 2009.
It does sound very good, but it's also clear when you have the windows open that the sound is completely fake. The Scirocco R has it fitted too so that it sounds different from the 210PS 2.0TSI unit.

You didn't miss a huge amount. They like the car and the features it comes with (like stop-start), but spend most of the time reciting figures (power, torque, fuel consumption), comparing the Mark 7 to the Mark 6 (the bit with the guy in the orange shirt) and showing pictures of other cars on the three day rally event.
-
We must be close to getting a proper British road test?
-
By the end of the year, Volkswagen hopes to offer optional noise actuator gadgetry to make the GTD sound like a monster V8 at full throttle – but thanks to clever computing, it will be audible only to those inside the car.
http://www.fleetnews.co.uk/cars/review/first-drive-volkswagen-golf-20-gtd-5dr/47410/
My GTD will lose iro £20,000 over 4 years according to this.
-
Not clear from that if this is an improved actuator, or if cars shipping now don't get one... :undecided:
-
It's as clear as everything else with VW
-
My GTD will lose iro £20,000 over 4 years according to this.
Their quotes are for 20k miles pa (i.e. 80k miles in 4 years). If you're a 10k miles pa driver or thereabouts, the GFV for GTD (which should be worst case scenario) is 56% after 3 years, so I would expect a realistic 60% after 3 and 50% after 4 in reality unless the economy gets even worse than it already is.
-
True, but I'm on 22,000 miles a year
-
True, but I'm on 22,000 miles a year
There's always a penalty for high mileage, no matter what you're driving. I still think you won't lose anywhere near £20k in 4 years - my dad's 6 year old Golf Mk5 GT 170TDI DSG with 111k miles on the clock has a p/x allowance of £5500 against his new GTD. Saying that though, losses depend on your options as they'll retain next to nowt, you'll lose £16k on the basic car price (my estimate, for what it's worth).

I read into that, the reviewer has no idea how reliable the TDI is as they just don't use TDIs in Canada to know how reliable they are. If they think the GTI is reliable, would they think VW would potentially put an unreliable engine into the GTD? Seems a very daft negative point, I wouldn't consider any of the US marques which probably dominate the Canadian car market to be any more reliable than VW.

Having seen a white GTI in flesh last week and seen how it shows all the lines and accentuates the features and chrome then seeing this has me even more convinced white is best for GTD.
Think the features get lost in that colour a little though it might just be the photos and be better in flesh.
Love the grey interior blends in well with surrounds and those wheels :)
As much as sure going to like the cloth seats do think VW missed a trick as think most of us staying with tartan would have paid for the option.
But overall the GTD looks pretty fine I think :)
-
Agreed, once I looked at these pic's made me even more sure that PW is the way forward... and I still like the even more understated GTD (no red bits for me, but I get it's a personal thing)
The thing I'm still really confused about is wheels, I think I like the 18 nogs more, but they don't fill the wheel arch enough imo...
-
I still to see one in black to see if I have made the right choice just think it will look stealthy especially with the 19" santiago's on and fed up of owning white cars.......should certainly look mean at dusk with running lights on!

I am a fan of black, my last two were black, Phantom and Brilliant and the A3 always looks amazing when I give it the full treatment, it is a great colour for a car, BUT it does show the dust and dirt quite readily and bird mess in particular and there is also swirls and fine lines close up.
I am not a detailer and the car does the daily churn of domestic and work and it is infrequent to when I get to give her a clean so for me I think the white is going to be a better day to day colour for me.
But do not second guess the look of the Black as seen many a Golf GTI in that colour and always look great and sure with them Santiago it will look amazing :)

According to that atricle VWs future is in US sales? If that's the case then why do they pay 2/3 of what the European market do (except for the poor Danes!)? Fair do's that a Mexican built one has far cheaper labour costs, but they keep moaning about wanting a German built one - the GTI and GTD would fall flat on their arse if they had to pay $40k for one. Are we subsidising the US market's cheap prices? They already get free metallic paint and a 10 year power train warranty. We get a very poor deal compared to them. It's hard to stomach that a German built GTI or GTD costs £9.5k in the US despite import tax - I thoughht we got favourable taxation for European produced goods with the EU.
-
We must be getting some UK reviews very soon so you think?

So the GTD gets the red stripe between the dials too then?
All the GTD photos I have seen confirm that red stripe is a standard feature (In other words it is exact same display as GTI) but until we see the UK dials ourselves we cannot be 100% certain.
Hopefully some of the GTI guys receiving theirs now will show if dials are MPH & KPH? or just MPH? Imagine it will be former?
-
In the price list it specifies "GTD specific instrument cluster" and "GTI specific instrument cluster" so i thought they'd be different?? :undecided:
-

They maybe will be? as all we have seen to present are demo and vehicles set up for reviewers and they could have been generically built with/without some features IE:ADC
You would imagine this line in GTD would be chrome as the red line, small a detail as it is, will look out of place in the grey/chrome GTD theme that replaces GTI Red.
Till the cars start flowing here I do not think there is any final certainty on anything. Is sound actuator standard on UK GTD or is there the 'sport pack' to come etc?

James, I love how you know every detail from the price list! Yeah, that stripe should be grey on the GTD sounds like...

Sadly it appears to be the same as the GTI cluster which is crap really isn't it. Especially as the UK brochure states "unique ‘GTD’ instrument cluster".
-
I suppose by "unique" they might mean different to the rest of the range. As if they copied the GTI description but changed it from GTI to GTD. Technically that's not unique then... But I could see where they were coming from.
Or the demos are all wrong.

Hopefully i'll be able to answer these questions (dials, "Soundaktor")today. Events happening over the weekend would imply that my dad's GTD will be collected today after the dealer has pulled some very long and complicated strings to streamline the delivery to the dealership from the docks.
If so we'll be getting the GTechniq treatments put on tonight and i'll take a few pics.

Looking forward to hearing all about it! Your dealer is doing a good job then. I somewhat doubt mine would attempt to "pull some strings" to speed things up for me in this kind of situation. heh heh.

I was a bit worried that if he pressed too hard on the port authorities that they'd be pulling the car to bits, concerned it was a mule car for drug trafficking and he was trying to bypass customs!
The dealer has pulled a bit of a fast one with the "free" service pack that was in the deal though. My dad has decided not to do VW finance - he's just paying for it outright with some of his savings (only making 2.9%). The dealer has asked him to pay the £120 difference on the service pack as it was £249 with VW finance, or £369 without. I'm sure that the £249 service pack offer came in after the point of ordering. There is certainly no mention of the offer in the early edition of the pricelist (dated 01 April 2013).
My dad has also offered to lend me the £20k I need for mine at 2.9% (the same he'd be getting in his ISAs), so that's a £48 monthly saving in interest for me. I will be pointing out that £249 service pack wasn't an option when I ordered mine in late March if he tries the £120 on with me.

Just been to see monkeyhangers dads gtd. Looks much much better in the flesh than any pictures do. I like it looks wise better than the gti as the wheels are a much better design IMO. not putting any pics up as it isn't my car. I can't wait for mine to arrive in September now... come on!!!

As tempting as maybe, we know whose car this is and that would be my thinking too, and hopefully we will get to see it anyway soon :)
Nogaro would have been a tempting option so to have as standard was a bonus, they work so well with GTD and show discs and calipers really well and even at speed to :)
I also like the exhausts side by side too
Glad you were happy when saw for first time in flesh and no anti climax as sure that eased any concerns and raised expectations to when get yours.
-
I walked through the workshop knowing that no matter what it wasn't my car I was looking at. saw it and a smile appeared on my face. I can't wait for September now and it hasn't just raised expectations it's blown them away.
-
mcmaddy: If you took some pics, get them put up - I won't mind in the slightest. My dad hasn't got back yet. If the weather holds off (looks like rain) We'll be getting the Gtechniq put on and then i'll take some some pics.

Wheels look great with the Carbon too :) They deifinitely a feature.
Shame we do not get the red calipers here and does not even look like they are painted grey, though things might change a little once the flow of GTI/GTD increases from these first ones off the boat.

GTD is readily reviewed against the GTI, mainly in line with preference but a review of a direct or very near (little cheaper) rival
Stacks up quite poorly really when consider more power and torque, yet slower and by all accounts far less refined. Also worse MPG and Emissions.
This GTD engine in the GTI suit is going to be very hard to beat in direct comparison to any sport diesel out there.

mjh: I would'nt include Vauxhalls answer to ACC/DCC in that comparison, it's not standard on the Golf either! The amount of standard kit on a GTD/GTI are part of what makes it great value (and most of it is proper useful stuff rather than gimmickery), that and the class leading GFV.
-

Yep, when did that was comparing with mine to see how panned out and pretty close really and it is not with any biased in saying no contest in what car would choose! Had a 1.8 SLXi once and interior had the feel of an Amstrad Power tower and though they improved still hate the whole facia, how arranged and materials .. Good to see what GTD is stacking up against directly opposed to the GTI comparisons given the one glaring difference.

What about a high performance model to rival the Ford Focus ST?
It’s on the cards – Seat top brass are considering a hot Leon ST Cupra model as an alternative to the Focus ST Estate, which has the circa-£25k hot estate market all to itself. The hot Seat would be the closest thing to a VW Golf GTI wagon, using a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder mustering around 220bhp. With VW insiders confirming that a Golf GTD Estate is being developed, the Leon ST Cupra could go on sale without stepping on the Golf GTD Estate’s toes. If the Leon ST Cupra does make the business case, you’ll see it sometime later in 2014.

Seems a bit odd to call it a Cupra and only give it 220PS when 261PS has been the recent standard. The extra PS over a GTI is probably the biggest justification to buy a Cupra rather than a GTI (the price difference isn't that big and better residuals on the GTI make the price difference pretty much redundant).

GTI v's GTD
Great review if you speak Spanish :)

There's plenty of GTD's in the UK now, albeit mostly at dealers as demos, so I'm surprised that there hasn't been any UK road test / comparison test of the GTD yet. The only ones I've seen are back from the original Euro launch in June. Anyone else seen anything yet?

You could get a test drive and make your own mind up. It is a step up from the MK6 GTD and the Scirocco 170TDI in power, ride refinement, interior, equipment. If you are after a performance Diesel you won't be disappointed.

I have seen the Midnight Blue (Milton Keynes) and the White (Letchworth) in flesh and to be honest I was blown away by the Blue which was not even a colour I was considering and then next day a shade more so by the white.
Think the GTD looks great in all colours from what seen as the chrome and black features enhances. CSG was my second choice but having seen a white absolutely no regrets at all :)
My A3 is starting to look so dated now when walk out to it.
Loved the interior too and this review I think just confirms it is going to be a great car to own.

Haven't watched it yet but its a comparison between the GTD and the GTI
-
Wow, what an unsaysfying review... :undecided:
Mpg over a 1km drag race... how utterly irrelevant.
Megane RS comparison to GTI... If you're going to compare just one dimension, why bother mentioning it?
"diesely", "the gti has more top end power" tell us something that we cant already gather just by reading the technical specs!
All in all, a wasted opportunity with yet another pointless same-stable comparison.
Now a GTD versus the Merc a220 cdi/BMW 120d etc/Volvo v40 d4 or a GTI versus one of its true peers (not a 300+bhp monster that costs 25% more to buy) would be worth doing!
-
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/66062/volkswagen-golf-gtd-vs-vauxhall-astra-biturbo
At last, a direct comparison to a rival. Maybe not a versus a 120d, but still, much better than the gtd v gti that have been offered previously.
-
Nice comparison. The difference in their depreciation is huge. The golf despite being around 25% more expensive to begin with will be worth over 10% more than than the Astra in 3 years time! I wonder how the gtd compares to the rest of its typical rivals on total depreciation over 3 years - any residual value geeks out there?

I think the only depreciation indicator you can bank on is GFV as a % of RRP for standrad spec (options are poor value for money from a residual values point of view and options are personal and, well optional. Absolute minimum the car company will give you - a show of them "putting their money where there mouth is".
At 56% the GTD is hard to beat.
I suppose the main condenders would be BMW 120D (184), Astra bi-turbo (192), A class A220 AMG Sport (170), A3 2.0TDI S-line(184)
A-class A220 AMG Sport retains approx 51% (reverse engineering the deposit, monthly payments and interest to determine the GFV)
BMW 120D M-sport retains approx 46%
A3 S-line 2.0TDI (184) retains approx 54%
Astra/focus/Megane are all around 35-37%
GTD is the smart money's choice.

Thanks MH
That explains why the gtd's 'whole life cost' on our company car configurator is so much lower than its peers'

Yep - take a 5 door GTD manual at £26k, and the 120D M-sport at similar money, run them 3 years and the GTD will be worth £3k more or thereabouts. Taken in reduced monthly payments, and you're talking £83 a month savings on the GTD (without tweaking for interest considerations) - about 22% cheaper to run. That is a significant saving for a car that is better equipped and better to drive. Your rear seat passengers will thank you for not getting a 1 series too.

GTD Vs the Astra Bi Turbo
Strange they praise the Astra engine and then you go look at the side by side figures for speed and GTD wins out quite easily - the braking comparison was maybe more proof to how good the brakes are on Golfs that been confirmed here.

No mention of DCC in this when commenting on the 'harder' ride but an overall high complimentary overall review given it does have focus on 'green'

Its in Czech (or similar - excuse my ignorance)...however the driving sequences are well worth a look, and there is a head to head with a 120d over a short slalom course.

@mark mans I realise you want your post count up but posting full stops to do it is rather annoying for others!

Anyone seen the 220d comparison in this month's EVO? Pretty honest review of the GTD in my opinion.

Evo October GTD vs BMW 220d
Four stars each
-
If im honest I expected evo to favour the BMW in a massive way due to thw RW drive. I was pleasantly suprised at how well they scored the GTD. That SE BMW does look pretty boring though if you ask me. I also massively prefer the VW interior, never been a fan of BMWs blandness.

Before deciding on the mk7 GTD as my next car, I had a Volvo v40 D4 R design for five days on test drive. Could not wait to hand it back and get back into my mk6 GT. The Volvo made me and my passengers feel car sick!
Best feature was the folding boot floor. Lol.
Also test drove a skoda Octavia vrs disel. Good car but felt a version behind the golf, Lots of mk 6 switch gear. Also the numbers didn't work for a company car.
Can't say anything about the Ford.I didn't really know about it in November last year.
-
Was it an old Octavia vrs as the new one uses exactly the same switch gear as the mk7 golf.
-
My mistake. it was a new one, but everything, especially the radio seemed a version behind the golf. there was no drama in the cabin like there is in a golf.

Every Volvo I have been in has made me feel car sick. My Wife wants a new XC60 next year but even in R-Design trim it feels too soft for my liking.

Interesting little write up.I wonder if the MK8 really will be the last of the diesel GTD's?.
