Title: I think I got a good deal!
Post by: Godzilla on 21 May 2013, 16:29
I needed my clutch fitting so I got a VR6 one for my 16v gearbox.  There is a local garage and one of the blokes that works there worked for Audi for over 20 years.  He said if I paid him cash he would do it as a private job. So I took my car down there the other night after 5pm and it was just him there. He fitted my clutch for me, drained the gearbox oil out and re-filled with new stuff, drained the coolant and replaced with new G12 or something it was called, put a load of new jubilee clips on my boost hoses as he was not happy with the ones already on there as some were a bit rusty, cleaned out the throttle body and a general good clean up around the engine bay.  All I asked for was a clutch to be fitted that I supplied.....He supplied the gearbox oil, coolant, clips etc and fitted the clutch for a total of £150 cash, I thought that was a good deal?  Plus I learnt a few things as I watched him do it all!

I dropped my car off at a garage a week ago. He took out old gearbox, which I dropped of for re-con, put in new clutch kit, new clutch cable, put on re-con gearbox, new discs & pads all way round, new rear wheel bearings, new axle/beam bushes. The genuine OE one's, 4 new top mounts. Oh and put in new gear oil.

I got a quote off one garage?, he said £400 for the labour lol. So I gave it in to another garage who I always use, he done all the above for £250. He also made me new rear copper brake pipes, he said if you doing all that work, you may aswell put these in new too, and he said I won't chrsge for them.

Now that is cheap. Oh and the OE bushes are very hard to fit in than powerflex ones too.

£250 for all that work is very good.  Great knowing the right people

Would never call myself a mechanic but can certainly do all that type of work and will be doing so in the very near future!
Just for the cost of the materials!

i`m no mechanic either but i do all my work myself too, investing in some decent tools plays the best part in getting a job done.. and as len said, it`s just the cost of materials then
