Noticed that the golf , when I don't drive it for a few days then start it up it smokes like no tomorrow for about 20seconds its oil its burning can tell by the smell ,
Just wondering if they are like this or do I have an internal issue , it never used to do it and I've had it for a year now , but I used to use it every day but now got the bike out for summer ,
I probably use like 1l of oil every 5-6k I would say so may just me being a panic ?
Probably should say its a 1996 1.8 8v (ADZ)

Sounds like valve seals to me mate. Oil seeping through them and staying in the cylinder untill you start it.
Get a compression test. This should give you a answer.

As above it does sound like valve stem seals from your description of smoke on start up. Take the plugs out to check the condition as it could indicate how bad the burning is but 1litre per 5-6k miles doesn't sound bad at all.
An oil change could help if the last oil was a wrong type or somebody did an emergency top up using something too thin?

Ill do a compression test on Monday and report back . Funny you say that I did an oil change back when it snowed last and used petronas 10w-40 , and did an emergency top up before a long trip once with 0w-40 , what do you recommend because I did an oil change yesterday and used castrol 5w-30

with only 1l going every 5-6k it's unlikely to be anything else than stem seals....
replacement is not too difficult and but you'll need a compressed air supply and an adapter to hold valve in place. only sh!te job cos you need to take cam out to get to the seals.

10w 40 is recommended. Use that!
Different engine use different oil.
5W 30 is diesel engines mainly

Okay didn't know that, autodata suggested 5w-30 and 10w-40 and had the 5w-30 to hand ,
Have noted millage and oil level so will see how it goes over the forthcoming ,
Anyone got a link to the spark plug compressed air tool I would need ?
I see that gsf has two options for the steam seals so will have to find out which ones mine takes ,
I can't work out the process with re fitting , so you've got the collets off with a socket over tem and hit with hammer , change the seal , how do you get the collets back in ?

You get a slim flat blade screwdriver, put a little thick grease on the end and the collet will stick to it temporarily. Then with some patience you should be able to get them back on the valve.
I've done it on my Mk2 16v using the compressed air method, it works well. As you will have the Cam(s) out, might be worth checking your hydraulic tappets, cam seal and chain if you have a 16v.

I've only got a 1.8 8v , but how do you compress the spring down enough to get the collets in because normaly when the heads off I use a compressor on each end of the valve ,
I think my compression checker , when you screw it in to the spark plug hole there other end is an airline connector for the gauge , so will stick the airline straight on to that

5w30 is the proper spec oil for the 1.8t golf/passat (and others) :nerd:
but as said 10w40 is the o.e spec oil

Surely if it was valve stem oil seals if I leave it on over run then boot I again it should smoke ? I get no smoke when driving just first start up for about 5secods made a little film will upload later

Valve stem seals are allowing oil to drop into the combustion chember which is then being burnt off, if you had worn rings it would smoke all the time.
