Title: when to change the cambelt

Have just bought a 2000 1.8t with 130000 miles on the clock, looking at the receipts that came with it, it looks like the cambelt was changed at 80000 miles, should i change it again now or at what mileage

It's based on time or mileage, Vw recommend every 4 years or 60k miles, whichever comes soonest. Personally I wouldn't take a chance with the cambelt and have it changed regardless, make sure you change the waterpump while you're there.

Isn't it every 40k on the 1.8t and 60k on the derv? Either way as said above get it all changed. Better to be safe than sorry.

they are prone to fail an you need to take timing belt off to get to it so best doing it while doing belt  :smiley:

This, the pumps have plastic impellers which break over time causing the waterpump to fail. As you're right at the waterpump when you're doing the cambelt it makes sense to change it at the same time.

I replaced the cambelt on the Passat even though there was a reciept for it 27k and 2 years ago. Didn't take the risk did it as soon as I bought it.

Just done one for a bloke that bought a Berlingo that's rated for stupid miles either 120 or 150k or 10 years. 6 years old and on 67k but again he couldn't see the point in taking the risk not knowing what sort of life it had.
