Hi,
I've been having a problem with my power steering on the Mk2 golf ABF.
There is a whine that comes after starting the car when its already hot. I've changed the pump over from another ABF and it still does the same thing and it also made the steering really stiff at idle. With the old pump I could of turn the steering at idle but now, when i give it some throttle and turn the steering becomes normal but the noise will increase. I've bled the system (i think) after the pump replacement and its now pretty much worse.
The fluid in the PAS system was a very gunky and dark when i replaced it. The fluid was red stuff - so it was the wrong fluid. I was told it could be the steering rack after the red fluid has eaten up the seals and causing the pump the run dry but I have no idea at all.
If someone can help me that would be grateful.
Thanks for reading
Rob

I got halfords vag specific pas fluid in mine. It's Like water and a lot more expensive than regular pas fluid though.

need to flush the system out after suspected pump fail or the metalic particles in the oil will kill the new pump.
pumps will pump anything as long as it resmbels oil they don't care if its red or green fluid but the racks don't much like the wrong fluid

Ok I'm back. Managed to flush the whole system but the problem still presists. checked the rack thoroughly and no leaks that I can see. This is so frustrating!

if your still getting ecessive pump noise the pump has to be suspected.
if the pump is working fine the only other thing it can be is the rack itself, they often leack but usally they still function, not come across one that dosent work without leacking
