Title: Fit PAS to classic MkII golf GTI ? possible-should I?
Post by: smallzoo on 18 May 2013, 21:06
My son has been donated a very earl MkII 1.8 8V Golf Gti from my older brother..lucky him. He is learning to drive in it but he us really struggling with the lack of PAS around the narrow streets where the test is taken..

I have two choices, buy a 'cheap' runaround modern car for him to learn in until he passes his test OR think about fitting a PAS kit to the Golf..

So.. is it possible and is should I ??

Thanks

Hi,

Can be done but it's a big job.

Sub frame has to be dropped to get it in.

first thing i would do is see if he can actually insure this as his own car once he has passed his test  :lipsrsealed:

This, and also make sure that the tyres are the correct width and inflated correctly, they never were that bad compared to many other cars of that time.
A few extra PSI in the tyres wont hurt either, but no more!

They may not have seemed bad at the time Thom, but jeez it feels like hard work now.

Fitting a PAS setup is a piece of cake with axel stands and a jack. Only scary bit on the subframe is the main bolt removal. If it spins you have the cut the floor to weld the captive nut for it to undo.

...and as above. Insurance!

Knackered bearings in the suspension  top mounts make the steering heavier than wot it should be.

Indeed sir! It's much nicer to drive at slower speeds and you still have some good feeling with PAS in a Mk2. Either that or buy him some weights to lift.
