Title: GTD Service Intervals...?
Post by: cosmicremedy on 17 May 2013, 18:05
I have just had my GTD in for its second service, I asked for the long life oil with the service indicator updating.

After collecting I checked for the next service on the MFD and it says 9,400 miles!  Surely this can't be right?  I was expecting around 18,000!

Am I wrong?

Thanks,

Martin

My Rocco was on long life and I did 22000 miles before being told it needed a service. I suspect they've forgotten to swap the computer over. There's an old thread on here about this somewhere.

I should have said the MFD previously had no data as it had been serviced by an independent garage 2000 miles ago from the garage I bought it from.  I think the VW garage has updated the MFD today, they have also wrote in the service book due in the next 10000 miles?

It's funny because when I spoke to the service guy he said the long life oil is the only oil that should be used on the GTD engine?  To be honest I take everything a dealer says with a pinch of salt...

Long Life oil is used whether the car is on 'time and distance' OR 'Longlife' service regime.
Time and Distance oil changes are due every 10,000 mls or 12months.
LongLife oil changes are due between 10,000 and 18,000 mls or 24months (approx)

Is there a reason you asked for the switch from T&D to Longlife??

Worth a read from the Mk V forum....

Your car is still on fixed interval as it starts to remind you at 500 miles before it is due i.e. @9,500.

When on long life it takes a while for the car to determine the mileage to next service at it bases it on your driving style/economy

All sorted now thanks, went back to the dealers this morning and had the service data reset for long life.  I had the major service so I should be covered for 18,000 miles or so...

I went for the long life as I do upto 20,000 miles per year, so servicing every 6 months isn't really practical.  Saying that I maintain my cars on a no expense spared basis, that way they keep running... So if i feel I want a service earlier I would do it.

Thanks for the comments anyway

I always assumed that when I had mine dealer serviced from new. The service schedule was marked LongLife oil used on the first 2 services. When I had 3rd service in January they didn't tick LongLife oil I asked them why not.

They gave some (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/KStanier/BS.gif) we still used LongLife oil but VW say we don't have to enter it in the service schedule.

The service time is set when it had the PDI. This can be changed later by the dealer or with VAG-COM\VCDS if needs change later. Mine is set on time & distance 10k/12months which suits me.

You can also check the oil quality with VAG-COM\VCDS, In Instruments and Advanced Measuring Values showed Oil Quality - Quality Poor considering it was only service 600 miles previously. I also noticed that you can set it back to Quality Good, I didn't bother.

I've also heard from a VW tech that this LongLife oil damages more engines than it fixes, so is it worth it?

One would assume that an oil developed for a longer period of engine use would be superior to one designed for just 10K/12months??  :undecided:

I don't understand why - If the oil quality can be 'checked' with Vag-Com - the user should be able to switch the results from good to poor (or vice versa I assume?), surely it's down to a sensor somewhere to decide if it's good or not?? Or am I misinterpreting?

My GTD goes in for it's 3rd service Wednesday... The second (and last) on my 2yr service plan... I wonder if they'll try n sell me another plan... and for how much? Warranty runs out in August.

I serviced mine a couple of months ago and I did the normal monthly Autoscan. It still says the oil quality is poor even though I bought the genuine oil & filter from the dealer.

There is no oil quality sensor - the car does not know what oil you fill in.

Oil quality is either good or bad - this is set up with the VW tester (or VCDS). It is a set value, nothing the ECU would change by itself.
