Title: Lamda sensor(s) location on 1.8 AAM automatic?

I know there are lots of guides..but not for the AAM engine. I would appreciate the location of the lambda sensors and where the plugs are for them. I want to disconnect them and drive without them on to see if there is any difference. No fault codes are coming up, but I am still having problems with the air/fuel mixture ration so I might as well try this. Shouldn't hurt...MOT is next month so will try anything...

you say no fault codes are coming up - have you checked the measuring blocks??

this will tell you if you have a signal from lambda probe or not - disconnecting will only make it run with a replacement value, which is always on the rich side. so if it's running rich (has anyone ever actually confirmed this with an exhaust gas tester?) due to faulty probe it will run rich with the probe disconnected, so won't tell you anything.

aha that is where i suspected it to be....it looks difficult to remove..can it be taken out and cleaned??or better to replace the thing...I have no idea what you are on about the measuring blocks..

the last exhaust test i had gave these results..

Fast idle test

CO 0.31 % vol  CO failed by 0.01%
HC   12 ppm vol
lambda    1.006

Second Fast Idle Test

C0  0.30
HC  45 ppm vol
lambda 1.005

Natural Idle Test

CO  0.24% vol 

So it just failed on the initial idle test..

The tester said the car is running rich but had no idea why...thy don't do repairs here as it is a council run MOT so he said take it to a garage...I took it to a garage in Bracknell and the guy saw the results and said don't worry about it..blah blah blah and so on...just drive it,....


I have had a fellow forum member check the head gasket for leaks in Henley and there are none..and the pressure in the water system..couldn't locate the problem...(thanks for look though..)

I haven't gotten in touch with him for an emissions test, but will do so soon.

Anyways if you give me some steps in testing the measuring blocks..I will do that..

With a lambda over 1 it is if anything running slightly lean. Smaller than 1 is rich.
lamba = available air / air required for complete combustion

The high CO content is your cat most likely that is no longer doing what it should.

would a bad cat be really smoky on startup and then work better as it heats up?and cause rough idling until it warms up.

what kind of smoke, blue, white, black?

your car is not running rich, if it were there would be more HC than just a few ppm.
