Title: Heated windscreen option withdrawn in Ireland
Post by: Fabio Bignose on 16 May 2013, 21:40
Notified today by dealer that the heated windscreen option has now been withdrawn in Ireland due to a'production complexity'!
Apparently a number of options were required to be ordered whereby the cost would come to about €800
This was after VWI had last month confirmed it would be available from week 22 at approx €360!!

Haha, typical!
Have you ordered? I got confirmation today that my car is being built today!

When I ordered, I was told the performance pack on the GTI wasn't available. I discovered last week (on Facebook!) that VW IRL changed their minds and now are offering the pack, but if I wanted it I'd have to wait till much later in the year.
I also had confusion over other options/spec such as the rear camera... So it'll be very interesting what the car will actually look like when it does arrive!

Was told today that my standalone climate comfort screen order now had to have the Advanced Phone Pack as a mandatory accompliment so i canned it.

To upgrade my options by £300 for something would never use and to know it is uselessly there each time drive car made it an easy decision to let go no matter how convenient it may or may not have proved to be (how effective with ice?) also there is a worry if insisting on Advanced Phone Pack that phone would have to be connected to it to work? something doubt very much, but why insist?

But moved on and optioned the DCC as think with roads locally I am going to get quite a bit of benefit from.

No not ordered yet as I was waiting on this option and several others to be clarified but its like drawing blood trying to find answers waiting for the dealer to go to VWI and then VWI to come back with a load of inconclusive and inaccurate info. I've been waiting since October and just want to order!

Chuffed for you regarding your build! You'll very possibly be the first in Ireland!

Had this been a £12,000 car, I'd think differently about the heated screen option, but in the grand scheme of things...  My car is my only real vice - don't smoke, drink very little, and don't gamble.  Peace of mind sometimes means more to me than what something is actually worth.

The reason why they insist on it is so that IF there is a signal issue (which I highly doubt for numerous reasons) they have themselves covered.  To be fair to VW, they are not responsible for the choice of phone that people make, so if they have an iPhone like myself, it'll be basic Bluetooth or I upgrade.

That's what makes it a crazy set up. Yes they aren't responsible for folks phone choices but with the iphone unable to use RSAP, its immaterial whether you take the phone prep or not because if the screen does shield the signal, the iphone still won't be able to connect to the external aerial so the whole extra is pointless.
They would have been far better allowing the end user to make that choice.

I will be amazed if the screen shields signal as would it then effect Sat Nav also? Think it will just simply turn out to be VW enforcing an option sale because they have an excuse to justify it - But we will know soon enough as Gryzor be able to tell us :)

More I read on the new v. 2 DCC with it's independent adjustment and on the new MK7 frame technology the more I am happy that selected that and dropped screen (would have loved the screen admit, just not at raised cost) given roads in this area, feel I am going to really benefit.

True re Sat Navs but VW won't be interested in 3rd party Sat Navs as they will place their GPS antenna somewhere in the car that won't be affected by any shielding. Was it not in the Shark fin for the Mk 6?

The old Renault Scenics had heat reflecting windscreens (Which incidentally does the MK7 not have as well?) and it was extremely hard to get a GPS signal in that. You had to place it at a certain point or it never fixed on any satellites.

Owned a VW Bora Sport many years back (great car, solid car that never once let us down) but had Audi A3 since until this MK7 GTi/GTD completely turned my head, so I have gone from being very Audi informed to a VW GTi/GTD novice on a learning curve though of couse there is plenty of VAG crossover, so all be patient with me :) - Good point in Shark Fin, think on my knowledge travels someone said very same thing in it being for Sat Nav and pretty sure seen them on new GTi

Shark Fin is for sat nav and possibly dab antenna too with secondary antenna on rear screen. Opting for the heated screen meant you got a cubby hole/cradle type thing where yout phone went and connected via bluetooth (i think). This was how the wlan was supposed to work or car-net as its been called.
