Hi all
Having a strange cutting out issue with my 1.4 mk3
Whilst driving the car normally if I take a corner or go round a roundabout (at normal driving speed) the car cuts out. But i can drive on straight roads and the car drives fine and doesn't cut out. Also If I take corners and roundabouts really slowly the car doesn't cut out.
I have googled the problem and have found it could be caused by dodgy ECU or fuel pump relays. I have changed both but that doesn't solve anything.
Also found that it could be the hall sender causing an issue. Again that has been changed but still didn't make a difference.
I have also thought it could be a fuelling issue. When taking corners, the fuel is sloshing to one side of the tank and its not being picked up?!
Just wondering if anyone else has any ideas as to what it could be cos I'm stumped.
Any help is appreciated!
Cheers

Forgot to mention that the car will not restart straight away once the car has cut out.
It will take me waiting a minute or two and pumping the gas peddle a couple of times before it will start again
Weird problem!

Hi.I'm not really up on your particular model but i had a similar problem on a mk1 many years ago.
Do you have a mechanical fuel pump mounted on the engine or is it an electric one inside the tank like the gti's etc ?.
It does'nt really matter i guess but on the MK1 it turned out that the gauze filter on the pick up pipe in the tank was blocked (commonly called the strainer).
I put a transparent in line fuel filter into the pipe after the mechanical fuel pump and soon found that when it died i could see the filter had no fuel in it.It took ages to restart as you had to wait for the sediment that had blocked the strainer to drop off again until the next time.
Sounds very possible to me

It is just a electricial pump in the tank itself.
I'm gonna change the fuel pump and filter tomorrow and see if that helps anything. Hopefully it will!

which 1.4 do you have - engine code?
does it have anti theft unit installed - normally can be spotted by a LED next to door pin.
fuel pump will not normally cause cutting out on turns, neither will fuel filter, both normally cause sluggish performance or stalling at higher revs with throttle fully open.
have you ever checked it with vcds? not just fault codes but also measuring blocks?
-
I don't know the engine code. All I know is that it is a 1.4 8v
No anti theft unit either.
I haven't plugged it in to check any fault codes. That will be the next port of call I think.
Only reason I thought it could be the pump is because i thought it might have been struggling to pull fuel through when the fuel is running to one side of the tank once I take a corner. It seems like once the fuel settles again when the car is stood stationery after it cuts out it is able to start up again.
I have changed everything else that it could possibly be except for the pump itself.
It's really strange. If the fuel pump change doesn't work then I am fresh out of ideas

check in service book, on cam belt cover or service sticker in the boot for engine code. or post the year it was built, might be able to tell from that or from a photo of the engine.
this way we'll know which engine it is. there is 3 different engines with 2 different engine management systems....
the fuel slashes round my tank too but pump still picks it up ok. don't think this will be the solution for your issues, so hold back and save you money for now.

Definitely do a fault code check before going out and getting an expensive fuel pump....

Year of the car is 1995 (M reg)
I'm not actually with the car at the min so can't check the engine code.
I'm sure I have a spare pump knocking about in my garage so it wouldn't cost me any money. Would just tick another thing off the list if I change it and it doesn't make a difference!

The year the car was registered is 95, does not tell you squat about when it was actually made.
So could be either ABD or AEX engine which are quite different in terms of injection.
Fuel pump- which car is the other one from? They have different pressures depending on which engine it was used for. Still not convinced this is the cause of your issue.
I would run a log with vcds while driving and monitor a few key parameters - this will tell you what actually is wrong with it.
Also would help if you would test what you have and don't when it refuses to start after cutting out. Does the pump run and pump petrol? Do you have spark on the plugs, that sort of thing.

Engine is abd.
I got told today that is slight possiblity is that my sub earthing out and causing the car to cut out.
I've taken the power off the battery for the sub and took it for a quick drive and it hasn't cut out. Not counting my chickens just yet. Ill take it for a longer drive later and see what the crack is then.
My fingers and toes are crossed that is just a stupid thing like that!
