I am looking at some lowering springs as in a 60mm drop as I already have spring/shock setup but springs are only a 20mm drop. I have seen a few lowering sprins on Ebay saying they are 60mm drop but the majority of ad's are saying 'Golf MK3 8v' 'Golf GTI 16v' My Golf was originally a VR6, do I need VR6 springs or would GTI 8v or 16v springs be ok?
-
To run a 60mm drop would mean changing the shocks as well.
8v/16v will be fine for yours with the 1.8t
-
Make sure you get the correct fronts for your year as the internal diameter was changed around 95 i believe so if you get the wrong one's your top caps wo'nt fit and you will be stuffed until you either get the right sized caps or the right springs

You can go -40mm on standard shocks but you'll need shortened shocks for a -60mm drop as standard ones won't last very long.
-
This is interesting. So the shocks wont be very happy with a 60mm lowering springs on them? Does it help that they are Koni shocks so should or maybe be able to take more of a pounding than say standard shocks?
-
the -60mm will be from a std golf (not gti) so they will be 40/45mm in real life
only quality (eibach) list true lowering and people moan saying -20mm is not enough (then go and buy -40mm apex etc)
oh and i would go for gti springs (95+ 65mm pig tails)

Nope you will need shortened shocks.

Oh.....I see, thanks Wayne.
So the lowest I can go is 40mm on my shocks, hmmm, wonder if it is worth it as she has a 20mm drop already? I like the idea of coilovers but to get a 'good' ride you need to spend a fair few quid as the Ebay ones give a very hard ride and are not that good from what I understand?

I agree with the shortened shocks, ideally matched to the springs as you'll literally kill the shocks within a few hundred miles. But, I have some 40-50mm lowering springs from some JOM shocks I fitted a couple of months ago which you are welcome to. PM me if interested and I'll charge you postage plus a drink or you can collect from the Harrow area.

Not necesary to change the shocks especially as you have Koni's.
Lowered the rear of my Pug without fitting shorter shocks and have done thousands of miles like that.

'Pi' also do shortened shocks quite cheaply, a full set of shocks and springs are about £240.. i've no idea about the quality but they can only be an improvement over old worn out gear.

Paul just use your koni's for now and when and IF they die then just buy some shortened ones.

What you actually need is uprated shocks, but as you have Koni's already they will be fine.

Even Koni sport shocks are only designed for -20mm springs, 60mm drop will need shortened shocks that are designed to work with the shorter travel.

This. The extra strain you're putting on the shocks will mean they'll fail prematurely.
