Title: Fuse Won't Stay In!

Hi Guys,

Just got a 99 Golf GTi Turbo.

Central locking doesn't work, the fob plain does nothing, and turning the key in the doors simply unlocks that door. Checked the fuse box to find that fuse 6 (Central Locking fuse I think), is missing. Put a new 5amp fuse in to realise it wont stay, it just falls back out.

First question, is it likely that fuse 6's absence will be stopping my key fobs working and the central locking working.

Second question, does anyone know of a work around to keep the fuse in place, I've not taken the box out yet to have a look at why it's not staying in (never removed one before so I need to research that)

Last question, how hard is it to replace the fuse box if it can't be fixed?

I know it's not ideal but how about putting tape across the top of the fuse and over the surrounding ones so it will remain held in place.
Although if the fuse is falling out, then the actual holder place for that fuse must be bent open which could cause a short circuit if the fuse can lose connection when it moves around on that spot.

As you said Fuse 6, that is the central locking, which will more than likely be needed for the remote to also work.

Would be be a stupid idea to wrap the fuse pins in aluminium foil to make them thicker so it wedges in place?

Is it only your central locking that doesn't work?

Try replacing Fuse 14

Seems to only be the central locking, I have also notice when I try lock and unlock it with the key it can sometimes arm the alarm, then I can't disarm it. I basically have to set the alarm off and put the key in the ignition.

The fuel Cap wont stay shut, which I'm hoping is also to do with the central locking. I'll replace 14 and put a fuse in 6 with some tape tonight and let you know how I get on.

DO NOT put a fuse in that position!

If it wasnt there to begin with chances are there was never one. That location might have been used on lesser models

yeah dont put a fuse in there. could cause a fire in worst case.


as for the alarm going off, if you unlock car with key you have ten seconds to turn the electrics on before the alarm goes off.

could just be the CCM being uncoded. i know this is why mine does not unlock on the fob but havent got around to coding the ccm in.

Didn't put a fuse in, checked all the other fuses, they were fine, gonna start a new thread for help with the central locking

They might look fine but try replacing fuse 14 anyway  :smiley:

You need to get it scanned with VAGCOM to pinpoint your issue before spending out your hard earned
