Title: Thinking of buying this Audi need help ?
Post by: Steve30 on 15 May 2013, 10:21
Hi Guys
I need some advice here i'm looking at pulling the trigger on the Audi A4 Avant but i've read a about issues with TDI PD engine regarding the balance shafts and oil pump failing. The car is a CAT D when I looked at I saw some overspray back bumper but couldn't see any other issues apart from that so just looks like cosmetic stuff ? My question is would you buy a CAT D motor also just to add its got one dealer service stamp and cam belt is due to cars's 57 plate 40k miles belonged to a women. Cheers  :undecided:

plenty of clean 1s for sale but i might buy a cat-d if they had photos of the damage an it was repaired by a decent company not fred in a shed, they are harder to sell on an a cat-d usually takes 30% off market value

Go over the car properly, you will see if it has been touched up from anywhere else as silver colour is very, very hard to match and you can spot the rear bumper is off shade than the whole of the car.

If you want a TDI, Buy the 1.9 TDI, there better than the 2.0 TDI engines. Alot better.

Also note if this has DPF?, coz you can run into alot of problems if you get one with DPF.

Cat d means hardly any damage. Just a bumper or even a scratch can be cat d.

Never be put off on a cat d car

Not quite true! this is a late car thats been written off, not a 1k banger! for it to be written off it must have had substantial damage, and was seen as an unknown quantity
I would give this car a wide birth, Ive just paid 8k for a mint A4 Avant S-Line in Black with all the bells and whistles, and slightly higher mileage
Look harder! straight cars are out there for your budget

Hi Thom

Can you explain a late car please ? ive spoken to fella again today and managed to get him down to 7k I've also checked out the back of it and seems all okay apart from some overspray on bumper but whats bugging me is accident was done back in 2009 so for them to write it off back then leaves question mark, but on a positive note she's been driven buy a women for 3yrs since the prang ???  :undecided:

think he means it was only 2 year old when it had the prang so it was still worth a few quid not a 1000pound car meaning it must have had a decent bump for the insurance company not to repair

Steve, "late" as in relatively new... thats what concerns me. consider Flood damage, stolen and unrecovered for a period of time, Fire damage, or damage to engine or gearbox or both, or stripped for spares... all the above are scenarios where the car doesn't have to be involved in an accident, or have body damage, so unless you can get confirmed what happened to the car, I'd walk away... especially if it was fire or flood damage... If you do go for it, get an independent engineers report done, could be the best £150 you ever spend!

Fire is cat E
Scrap or spares is cat B
scrap only is cat A
cat D is insurance not paying to repair car. This can be down to a very high quote from a repair garage. They might of said £7000 for new paint.

I was looking at a cat d 2000 bmw 528i. 10 years ago it was wrote of because paint was damaged and the car needed spraying. It was a £30000 car in 2000 only 3 years on it was wrote of for a paint job.

if the car sustained bad damage it wouldnt be a cat d regardless of cost.

wow sounds like it should be cat b.

I guess you dont know what your getting.

I once bought a cat c 106 gti. Shell was damaged so they bought a new shell painted it and put all the parts on. Had pictures from start to finish. End result was a perfect car with no damage what so ever!
