I've done the search, but most topics seem to be about stainless or performance systems.
What standard system would you recommend? Also tailpipes. Many cars that I see have shiney tips, but I seem to remember that GTIs originally had black tips. Does anyone know for sure which one is closest to factory spec?

One supplied by Volkswagen.
That'll be pretty close to factory spec.

I rang TPS yesterday and they told me that much of it was NLA, hence my search for an alternative.

OE has Stainless Steel tips

OE has Stainless Steel tips
The reason I question that is in the description here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-GTi-Mk2-1-8-16v-86-92-Exhaust-System-Twin-Exit-/271205322955?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AGolf|Plat_Gen%3AMK+II&hash=item3f2518d0cb
Also the car in the original sale brochure from 1989 appears to have black tips too.
Replacement OE may have stainless tips, but can anyone remember what they came from the factory with?

I brought an eBay special about a year ago, as I was trying to get back to standard as quick as possible on a very limited budget. I think mine was a similar price and from Poland. It has never really fitted right often having to keep adjusting it as it seems to touch various parts underneath the car resulting in rattling and tapping. Also it sounds very tinny and not a very nice note from the tailpipes, but when moneys going on other bits of the car it will have to do for now. I'm sure vw heritage do a oem stainless but I'm sure it's around £300 mk.

Heritage do a stainless back box for £200, but I'm sure the rest of the system is alluminised steel. Either way, I'm not paying £200 for a back box.

100% the factory original 16v cars came with twin stainless steel tip pipes, I removed mine about 5 years ago, it had the VW logo embossed into it... The tips were 2inch diameter iirc
My Jetex system was the closest I could get to OE, looks fine, fits well, and isn't too noisy

Do you happen to have the 2 box system or the 3 box system?

i got this one for mine, and i think its a good fit.
Only thing is i cant decide if the tail pipes stick out too far or not :/
mine is an early 8v but you hget the idea of the fitment, not too bad i thought

My Jetex is the 2 box system...
This pic was taken about 7 years ago, and shows the Factory fitted system, and when I say factory fitted, I mean it! there was no join in this system over the rear axle, so it was fitted before the rear axle was fitted in 1989! Thats not bad going! although the car had only done around 60k iirc at the time...

This is my Jetex system, just a nice alternative to the OE system really

Cheers Thom, yours being in one piece is a pretty definitive answer then...for your car. I can only presume that big bumper cars were the same?
That may well have answered the shiney tip question, but which system to use. What's the Ernst one from Heritage like?
