Post by: nickinspain2 on 09 May 2013, 17:01
hi bought a 2002 gti last week, runs fine but when on idle there is a loud ticking sound from black plastic box on left hand side of engine next to expantion chamber. I took it to local garage who fitted a new coil pack, but its still doing it. any one know whats wrong? thanks nick

It's the carbon canister, it's perfectly normal.

The canister's job is to take petrol fumes from the tank and vent them into the intake, the ticking is the valve releasing the fumes.

You can delete it if it's annoying you:
