Hi all what the biggest alloy size can I fit to my mk4 golf all the suspension and everything is all standard nothing modified at all basically I've been offered a swop my 15" for a set of vw 18"
-
19s fit nicely, 18s are spot on as most people have them fitted, will look like a 4x4 with out suspension mods though pal
-
im running 19s just now but have had a set of 20s on a mk4
-
So 18's will be a straight fit without having to change anything ? Ill post a pic of them
-
if there 5x100 they will fit ok
-
shouldnt have any issue pal, only time you would is if your lowered you'll find rubbing :lipsrsealed: is a bit of a pain in the backside
fitting 15mm spacers up front and 20mm out back will set it off nicely
going lower you'd need to sort out the ARB as previously mentioned
-
Here's a pic fella they are on a mk4 now but wanted a expert opinion to make sure I didn't need spacers ect but looking at the wheels will the standard wheel nuts be ok or would I need longer ones

nice
you could add spacers just to square it off, as said it shouldnt really cause and issue as its just the wheels, never considered the bolts really but they should be fine to use your other ones, if your not too sure you could take them to you local wheel and tyre dealer to check, shouldnt have issues, easiest way is to remove and measure the thread depth of your current wheels againts the new ones? you obviously need longer bolts for spacers and most kits come with the bolts anyways
-
cheers fella to be honest i didnt really want to add spacers ect just wanted to do a straight swap fair enough the wheels are 60 miles away but worth the travel i reckon i had a issue before with a set of 17's i had but they were aftermarker wheels but got rid of them being on a mk4 golf i know they are 5x100
-
Is it true putting bigger wheel on makes the ride more bumpy
-
its gonna be a bit more bumpy by my understanding, not alot though, had a mate with a 2ltr and bbs 18s, couldnt really tell much difference
-
Cheers James only asking because I asked the bloke why would he swap 18" for my 15" and he just said he wants smaller because 18" are alot more of a bumpy ride I'm trying to get as much info about them as ill be driving 60 miles to get them and abviously be driving home with the 18's on looking at the pic would you say the bore and ect... Will be ok for my car
-
i believe so pal, they look like RS6's or reps if not original. all mk4s are the same stud pattern, you'd be a bit better off with standard suspension, when you get back it may be worth while replacing the bumpstops.
-
Bumpstop never heard of them what are they for and where would I get them from
-
these:

think they're designed to stop some of the harshness on the shocks
-
Are they easy to fit and will these take some of the bumpyness away once the 18's are on

not sure pal, mine split across the middle so theyre in two halfs atm, not lowered and it feels a bit ruff in the back when going over bumps apparantly, new ones could help with dampening the judder but not drastically, may be worth while looking into you mounts as well tbh all the bushes etc
-
With 18's on will I need to do the mounts and brushes or is that just an option ? Sorry if I sound thick but still learning lol
-
its an option, my view is that if you can do them then why not? n dont worry about the questions bud, thats the only way you'll learn
-
How much do you reckon it'll cost to do the mounts and brushes
-
bushes would be advised to go poly bushed or after market

if you can do them yourself then bonus just make sure you get them for the 2ltr
question: have you thought about getting a 1.8t instead?
-
Tbh I was thinking about selling or part x my car near the end of the year
-
dont worry about the bushes if its being sold later this year bud, not worth it then
-
Should I just do the bump stop then ?
-
yeh tbf if they havent been done yet then nows a good enough time really, i think you will have to either take the top mounts off for them or take the shocks out and put them on that way, though this is all circumstantial depending on the ride quality when the 18s are fitted obviously lol
-
What would it be like if I left the car as it is with 18's on would it cause any probs
-
would be fine bud, it also does depend on your roads, here in suffolk theyre a merrr
-
Around here they are ok ish but I spend a lot of time back in London (where I'm originally from) around my mums area it's a nightmare pot holes every 2 miles ect ... If be better off with a push bike around there lol

lol cheaper too, like i say, give it a go without worrying about, 60miles trip should be enough for you decide really, or have it a week with your general on goings and then decide? :undecided:
-
Tbh I would love a set of montys 2 so if I don't like the 18's I can use them as a bargaining tool
-
lol theres always a sillver lining!
-
If you're selling the car at the end of the year leave the wheels alone. The 18's will either make no difference to the value, or lower it because they don't look right without lowering the car a few cm. Plus you've got to tell your insurance company, and the tyres could be crap.
-
Selling the car was only an idea if I can do bit and bobs to my car to my taste I may keep it until it dies lol my car is on 100,000 miles at the mo
