Hey guys, just wondering what your opinions are over:
Pure White Vs Onyx White
Black Non Metallic Vs Black Pearl Effect
I'm thinking of ordering a Golf but in a dilema about whether to spend extra on the metallic paint. Is there really that much difference between the two? Which colours do you guys prefer?

In my opinion the only flat colours that look good are White and Red, Flat black is never a good look.

I was told by the dealer you would be nuts to order Onyx White as its very hard to respray if you ever have any body work damage. Im not sure how true that is...

I reckon either flat white or pearl black. I've been a die hard black fan for years and this is the first time ive opted not to go with it. Black is just too hard to keep clean and requires loads of attention. However, if you do choose black go for pearl as flat black is not the best IMO.

I've had deep black pearl in the past, and when clean it looks stunning. Trouble is after 5 mins of driving the dust & dirt are highly noticeable. Saying that its definitely worth the extra cash over the standard black.

I would say light colours do not need a fancy finish to look good (i.e. gloss white looks as good as pearl white), whereas dark colours need more fancy to look good (i.e. pearl black looks better than gloss black).
However the price Volkswagen demand for Onyx White is not worth it, when you consider it does not cost much more to paint a car in pearl effect compared to metallic or non metallic (a friend of mine who is a sprayer said it only costs a couple of pounds more to paint do a metallic or pearl effect compared to gloss and said only black demands a higher premium but not by much)

From what I know it is harder, because it is impossible to replicate the finish regardless, unless you can get hold of the exact same spray gun (because every individual spray gun sprays the paint slightly different)
The easiest paint to fix in is non-metallic, because you can blend it in or use polish to compensate (and eye ball it), whereas with pearl finish their is another factor to determine a good fix (how it reacts to sunlight makes it harder for the painter to fix) and professional repairs do not use the exact same paint, because the colour does naturally lose its colour over time (red is the worse for this one from what I have been told).
The worst to fix is matte paint however, because you cannot blend and you cannot use polish to compensate (a friend of mine had to work on a matt grey BMW M3 with stone chips and took 4 attempts to make it presentable).
The easiest colour to fix is pretty much a gloss white from what I know.
(please note I am no expert i worked as a spray shop assistant i.e. sander for 3 months when I was younger and chatted alot with the sprayers whilst waiting for the paint to dry)

All pearlescent paints are hard to colour match if you need any respraying. I had a 1.9TDI Polo Sport from new way back on 03. The Colour was black pearl and the car had a small ding/crease on the front wing wheel arch with a perfect paint finish, so it was done at the factory prior to painting and missed at PDI. The dealership had to get it pulled out and painted up. They opted to blend in a small amount of new paint around the affected area and you could see the resprayed area in overcast weather. I had to get them to paint up the whole front of the car for it to be un-noticeable.
Changed my order yesterday from Pearl Black to Tornado Red after seeing a Pearl Black Golf covered in swirls and white light lacquer scratches around the door handles (probably belonged to a lass with razor-blades for nails, but nevertheless....) and with the lightest coating of muck/dust from the roads taht shimmer is lost.
VW Red is about the hardiest red out there for fade resistance (Vauxhall seems to be the worst, by a long way). My Dad's 07 Golf GT still looks as red as the day he got it and he doesn't look after the paintwork. It gets washed a few times a year. There is no chance of a Tornado Red fading to any noticeable degree for many years if you even half look after it. I saw an 89 MK2 GTI in Red (presumably Tornado) and it still looked amazingly red.

I think it is really very difficult to tell from the photos we have seen. Nearly all the press shots of the car in White are Pearl white.
My Scirocco is white and it looks great, so don't see why the regular white on Golf won't look brilliant also.
Think black looks amazing when it is clean - as does White.

Not much chance of that if you are in Cambridgeshire.
Think I might try to arrange to meet up with some of the local buyers when they start getting delivered as there are quite a few round my way on here. We can compare cars, take photos etc.

I changed my order from Oryx white to Pure White after seeing the sample in good sunlight.. and thinking "Ooooh... Sparkerleeeeey!" (I almost dropped my Chihuahua complete with matching accessories in the excitement)
It was too much like the odd pearl white Toyota use for my liking. More to the point, in low light... it looks like (in my opinion) a dirty white... So changed it to Pure White, would rather have a flat paint I can seal and get a really deep shine to. But, a friend of mine loves it and has ordered with it. As I've said before I think it's a real love or hate colour finish.

I have to disagree here. I think it's a fantastic white. And I love the fact that it looks a matt white in low light. Hell I might even change my colour again. Oh man!
And why oh why am I beginning to like the 3 door oryx white more than the 5 door?!

That's just it, it doesn't look a matt white in low light, it looks like off white with gold bits on it. But yeah go for the three door! you know you want to! :smiley:

I have to agree, really not keen on the oryx white. Much prefer the brighter, flat pure white.
Now, if I were going to go for black, it would be deep pearl all the way!
