Title: Panoramic Sunroof / 19 inch Alloy combo
Post by: tom90 on 07 May 2013, 20:19
Hello GTI owners/Future GTI owners I am currently car looking for a replacement to my Peugeot RCZ and of course the GTI is extremely high on my list of potential replacements.

could not help notice when speccing my dream Golf GTI you cannot have the 19 inch santiago alloys and the Panoramic sunroof combo in both the car configurator and the price list, which it says "not with 'santiago' alloys" on the panoramic sunroof in the price list.

Just wondering why this is not possible, or have got this wrong or something along those lines and in reliability this combo is actually possible and just mis understanding what they are saying or something.

If this is the case got the awkward challenge of choosing between the nicest alloys in my opinion or the sunroof I miss having on a car if I do end up going down the GTI route (which seems quite likely right now tbh).

thanks for reading and hopefully will be on here in the future if I do go down this path.

It was the same with the R mate, you couldn't have the 19's and the sunroof apparently it's down to the kerb weight. >:(

Correct me if I'm wrong but can't we just spec the sunroof and then add our alloys of choice at a late date?  Might end up looking the Austins anyways!

You mean aftermarket? If so then yeah you can do what ya like i suppose, if you mean add the wheels to the spec after ordering the roof then i doubt it?

That picture has been mentioned a few times, whether it will be an option in europe i don't know but you can't have both in the UK.

Thats exactly the scheme I am on about having if it was allowed (tornado red, santiago alloys, panoramic sunroof with performance pack)**edit** just realised it does not have the performance pack on that show car

Guess I could always talk the dealership in doing it there end (not sure what I would do with a spare set of austin's however)

I am just curious on if it would have any negative impact on the warranty front going around the factories back and fitting those alloys (I know being paranoid but surely the reason weight restrictions are in place are warranty related/ wear and tear)

Not sure what I would do with a spare set of austin's however

Ordinary Golf owners are often interested in picking up GTI wheels... eBay?

It'll cost a stupid amount of money to do it that way unfortunately, if a single 18" Monza shadow is £500 from a dealership without a tyre how much do you reckon it'll cost for 4x19" wheels with tyres??

Jimble is right. You won't quite get full retail value on your standard GTI wheels, but you'll be paying it for your 19" Santiagos and £200 a piece tyres (if you shop around).

The tyre costs alone nearly cost the same as the option to upgrade to Santiagos. Would a set of tyred up Austins get you enough money to buy a bare set of Santiagos?

If VW exclude the combination of 19" and sunroof down to kerb weight and you circumvent it by going down this route, if you have any suspension issues under warranty you might not have a leg to stand on (unless you are able to swap out the wheels back for standard Austins/Nagaros before the dealership sees your car). If you are planning on going 19" then you should definitely consider the ACC system to have the option of softening the ride over poor surfaces.

you are right, if I am honest I would most likely not go around the manufacturer/dealership regarding this, because there has to be reason that they disallow it due to kerb weight as monkeyhanger noted suspension issues) and the costs involved changing the alloys are definite turn-offs (as both jimble and monkey hanger noted)

However I will still try it with the dealership getting that combo if not then sunroof and live with the less attractive alloys (not a fan of aftermarket alloys anyway)

regardless of the alloys I choose I would specify the ACC system because the last two cars I have owned have been terrible on rough roads and fancy owning a car with a decent ride for a change. Cheers anyway

You might find the Austins growing on you.

But, you have to live with them being backwards on one side of the car... figuring out which side is which will drive you nuts! Trust Bear on this.

I do believe (but stand to be corrected), that the "weight" issue has nothing to do with suspension loads, but more to do with CO output and tax classifications, so I don't think if you retrofitted a set of Santiagos (if you are rich enough) there would be any warranty issues.

Can you have the sunroof on the diesel Golfs? Thats got a big heavy diesel engine so if so then it wont be anything to do with keeping the weight down  :undecided:

Who's going to be the first to retro-fit

My dealer told me the sunroof couldn't be ordered in combination because of the 'harshness' of the ride caused by the 19"'s caused problems with the roof, (even drew a diagram of how the support structure of the roof changed between having and not having the panoramic sunroof)... that sold the 19"s to me straight away

that certainly explains why they did what they did.
