Welcome to the forum Dan, buy a mk3 as they are much cooler and way better than mk2's which no one likes and can smell a bit funny too.

Mk2 gets my vote, if your going for mk3 then get a 16v, whatever you go for buy on condition and check on rust.

Buy on bodywork condition Dan...better to have a perfect 8v than a 16v teabag...

The 8v engine is a boat anchor

Just hold out for a decent 16v, don't rush into buying anything, theres plenty about......

See more valvers on here with 'issues' than 8v's....rather be driving mine than staring at it in bits.

Someone went fishing!
One of these would look great mounted to the Poop Deck of a Mk3

Mk2 all the way

Somewhere there is a photographer who specialises in sea fishing/whaling photo's and enjoys many more hits to his/her photobucket account than he/she otherwise would.

Drive both and you'll be suprised how good a nice 8v is, don't listen to the haters..most of them don't even drive golfs.

Have a go in a 16v too as you might prefer the revvier nature of the abf, the 8v is a bit more laid back and torquey but still makes for a great drive.
