A dealer? Taking the piss??
No way!!!

that is why i always go and inspect the parts before they do any extra work! and if they cant give me my old parts back then i dont believe they have been changed!

the cats are nigh on inpossible to dent, without knowing about it
if you wack it hard enough to dent it the flexi coupleing gets riped in half, and that alerts you to the issue

Oh the power of social media nowadays!
Terrible story. I'd be fuming, you should kick up a right fuss. Free servicing for life or you go to the papers!

I took the Golf into VW once to get the door module fixed and afterwards they handed me a report with £3,500 worth of repairs "needed" on the car. Over half of it was completely unnecessary, and most of it not needed at all!

Cant remember who it was but i saw someone post a recipt from audi once for something like £3500 to have a DPF filter replaced and a bulb changed.
they took it to a garage who i belive either cleaned the filter or replaced it and then changed the bulb, ended up costing them around £500 iirc.
i only ever take my car to a dealers if i want a new part, from what iv seen from dealers is they replace things not fix them. if i want something fixing i buy the parts and take things apart and fix it my self
