Title: Hub nut removal...
Post by: spikenipple on 03 May 2013, 18:52
Any tips?
I've already broken my 3/8" drive bar trying to undo it (Halfords sh!te) so I've got a quality 1/2" drive bar on it with a 3ft tube over it and I still can't get it to budge

I need to change the outer CV boot for the MOT on Tuesday.

Simple really....... bigger bars

Use 3/4" if you have it.

I put a short scaffold bar over the socket extension bar and then jacked it up with the trolley jack, came loose eventually but it took a while.

Oh no! Hope mine isnt that bad!

What size is it? Think I have most of the big sockets.

iirc that nut is tightened up with somewhere round 210nm.... i.e. at 1m distance you need to apply 21kg and that is when just done up... add a little bit of rust, salt,.... 1m pipe and some muscle will get it loose thou.

^^^ love the maths ^^^
Our hub spanner is a meter of 2x1" u channel with the socket welded on the end, nothing can break .

Just done it but it was all off the car (hub & dr shaft) and we had 3ft bar and hit it with the hammer

here's some more math for you....

you only got full force for loosening bolts as long as the bar is at horizontal, since gravity only works down. the force exerted on bar will decrease with every degree you go down. so weight alone is not the answer ;)

I've got a 30mm socket 12-point socket on it, with a 5" extension bar (can only do it with the wheel on and the socket doesn't protrude far enough), then a 24" long 1/2" drive breaker bar with a 3ft long tube over it...still won't move before the socket slips off of the nut (awkward as fooook).

Your 1/2" breaker bar should have a swivel head???
So surely no need for the extension?

Yeah it has, but to apply the force the right way the bar needs to be perpendicular to the socket, and the socket isn't deep enough to reach the hub nut without an extension.

Not done this on a Golf yet but have on many other cars without any trouble, so maybe this will be my Nemesis!

This is why I love my air tools

I almost invested in an electric powered impact gun rated to 450Nm this month, ran out of funds though.

In other news...

SUCCESS!

Managed to get the fecker off by taking the wheel off, sticking the wheel nuts back on, getting my missus to hold the brake on and undid it with the big bastard 1/2" drive bar!
It deflected too much with the extension bar on so I thought I'd try it like that and it worked. I'll remember this method for next time!

I invested in one of those electric impact guns, whipped my hub nuts straight off. Only problem i have is that the splines seem to be welded together and no matter how much i hit them with a large hammer they just wont budge.

It is a lot easier and safer to do it with the wheel on and the car on the ground and getting someone to sit in the car with foot on brake.

Good result with getting it undone  :afro:

I did this very task a few weeks ago you will need a big wrench a 30 mm socket a broom and a very long bar first take the wheel off making sure the car is VERY secure then start the engine and wedge the broom between headrest and brake pedal next trick is to grab the big bar and wrench and place in a way that you are pulling upwards not pushing down (unless you are a big lump) I hope this helps anyone
