Post by: Whiteshirt on 02 May 2013, 15:04

That sucks.  Which will you keep?

Had rear camera on my GTi Edition 35 but no sensors.
I found that I was still looking behind me as I did not entirely trust what I could see through it
and the camera only gives a narrow view behind the car, so I was still looking behind.

So if correct what dealer says will stick with the park assist.

Blimey, the drama never ends does it?!  I've a good mind to just cancel altogether, save up for a year, and get one second hand where I know exactly what it will have!

I'd like to know if you have the camera but want to change the view to show the graphics from the sensors can you do that, i.e. can you switch between the two, or does having the camera effectively remove the parking sensors graphics leaving you with just the beep beep effect?

Anyone know?

This is getting silly now!  Its like they've only just build a GTI with all the options and then realised that some of them don't work in conjunction with others - ridiculous!  Especially something like this, as the likelihood is that if you've specced park assist you would also have added the rear cam.

On the plus side, an August delivery is a lot earlier than the chatter yesterday!!

You're bluffing.

Anyway, won't make any difference if you wait a year as we'll probably still be waiting for ours to arrive and placing an order then will put you on another year waiting list!  MY14 really does mean 2014 it seems

Haha, well I did say "I've a good mind..." meaning not quite there but bloody tempted! But nah, it is a bit of a joke all of the information/misinformation we keep on getting fed.  Maybe MY14 really does mean that  :undecided:

The brand new price list doesn't seem to say that the camera can't be chosen with park assist, so it's out of date already!

And a Golden labrador, (but only in conjunction with the white stick, you can't add the labrador separately).

I'm guessing that something appears on screen when you use park assist, so clashes with the camera?  Surely they could work around this by using camera footage for reversing, except when using park assist?

Ah, but as I mentioned above something appears on the screen even just using parking sensors.  From the tech glossary:
Quote
If your car has a radio or radio navigation display this gives you extra help by showing exactly how close any obstacles are.

So, if you have rear camera which view does it show you?  The camera feed, or the parking sensors graphics?  Best bet would be if they have a button on the display that toggles between these two.I really would like to know what happens if anyone knows from having rear camera and sensors on a previous Golf!

If there is a toggle button why not do that for park assist too?  UNLESS... park assist adds a sensor where the camera would have been thereby making it incompatible.  I'm speculating again, sorry.

I can't recall, but, I'm sure I remember in my mates Passatt CC who has a camera, it also shows a representation of the sensors in the MFD.

This is an old image, but shows both camera and graphics:

Interesting!

Another thing.  The description claims that the sensors activate when you enter reverse.  So when do the front sensors activate?  And does the camera turn off every time you take it out of reverse?

When you reverse, both front and rear sensors activate.  When you are driving forwards up close to something, you have to press a button to activate them (again, both will activate, not just the fronts).

Yes, when you go out of reverse, the camera disables.

Well I've ordered Park Assit for Rear Camera and just spoken to the dealer and he's not aware of any changes. Everything still shows as fine on his order screen ?

VW are talking bollocks saying you can't have park assist and rear camera. plenty of people retro fit the camera with park assist and it works just fine. why do they bother having a configurator if the sodding thing can't configure properly. if I get a phone call or an email saying I can't have both then I'm cancelling my order!!

I ordered Park Assist originally, then decided a short while ago to add Reverse Camera.
The dealer contacted VW to arrange this, but according to their screen this could not be done.
The dealer asked VW to get back to him to ascertain the reason this could not be added.
The reply from VW was these two are incompatible.
I wonder if I had ordered the camera with the park assist originally :-
a) Nothing would have been said till nearer the build date. Then rejected
b) The order would have gone through

The bottom line is I am not really bothered about the camera, but the facts need to be right.

Post by: mcmaddy on 02 May 2013, 16:55
they are two different systems. one is to help you park either parallel or in a bay and the other is to see where you are reversing if you don't use the park assist. I didn't say nuts in my last post either! customer services are clueless!! if you don't press the button for park assist then the camera will show on the screen. if you use the park assist system then the camera is disabled. that's how it works on the tiguan

My dealer just called me about something unrelated and I asked him about this.  He said he's had GT models come through with both of these options on.  It's all a bit strange.

I think your dealer is wrong. Plenty of people retro fit the camera and it works perfectly with park assist. If some GT models have this on then he's talking rubbish. case of another dealer not knowing the first thing about what they sell!

So my dealer isn't wrong then?  He has confirmed that be doesn't think there's a problem with ordering both items.

I originally ordered the rear camera and colour multi function computer.  Since the new price list dropped and the colour computer is now standard I have swapped it for Park Assist.  Has been added to my order by dealer without issue and not heard anything further.

Do you have to switch between the cam display and parking sensor graphics by pressing a button every time?
Title: Re: Rear Camera
Post by: mcmaddy on 08 May 2013, 20:19
You should get camera view and smaller picture of car with all around sensors showing. I think the only time you may need to press anything is if you use park assist. That's what the rns510 was like.

Can you tell me the name of the dealer?
I need this ammunition to shoot my dealership down in flames, if they come back to me and say yet again you can't have park assist with camera.

Ordered  at VW Warrington.

Has anyone seen the rear view camera in action?  Do the overlay guides move according to your steering?  The few vids I've seen on YouTube seem to show a static HUD/overlay.

That's a shame   .  The ones that show the path based on you turning the steering are much cooler!  Is there any easy way to tell from that vid if that is a standard 5.8" screen or the pro 8" screen?  Just trying to get a feel for how good the screen image will be via the camera.  I just have the standard composite media system so will have the smaller screen.

That's the 8" Discover pro in the video, i've got the camera in my mk6 with the RCD510 and the image is decent so i would imagine the comp media will be at least the same and probably better.

I don't think cars with park assist have the curved parking lines on the reverse camera. unless the car I was in want working properly  :undecided:
