Title: 16v gearbox selector help

My car is being a real s~it to get in to gear. I have been told it is the gearbox selector......Where is this part and what needs doing?

Probably your shifter and the shift tower on the gearbox. You can probably rebuild them both with bushes and bearing, but the best solution is an 02J shifter and tower from a mk4, A3 etc.

Having a look at my gearbox and I think I may have the MK4 tower in the MK3 16v Gearbox if that would work?  Reason I say this is I looked up ' 02J Shifter and Tower '  after reading your reply and the images are exactly the same as what I have, although my gearbox is a MK3 GTI 16v as Ben said about the code on it.

The clutch is on its way out, wonder if that may make gear changes very hard?  Also there seems to be transmission fluid around the gearbox area??
