Hi all, help needed!
As i was driving home, the car was missing occasionally, does this quite often (normally when i accelerate i have to really be gentle with the pedal or it will choke a bit) i've put it down to the carb not being 100% set up.
As i was going along the battery light came on (car had stalled as i was driving) wouldnt bump start so i rolled to a halt :( The car turned over fine on the key but wouldnt fire. The rev counter then jumped from 1k to 7k back and forth etc... the buzzer for the oil came on, rev counter back and forth etc...
I thought it might be bad Earth, but it all seemed fine, the disttributor cap was dry (thought it miught be damp). Tried again, rev counter bouncing around, then it started!
Drove fine for a few miles, no hesitancy. Then, same thing again. Rev counter jumping all over, car cut out. Wouldnt start again this time, then eventually it did. Ran rough, then stalled. Kept trying, eventually it did go, then i drove it home, fine most of the way, but just as i arrived home, juddering and missing again, stalled at the top of the drive where i then left it.
The way i see it is its one of four things:
1) Distibutor (was making squealing and clicking noises as driving)
2) Ignition module (under ECU cover)
3) Coil
4) Hall sender
There was plenty of fuel in the filter, so i doint think it was fuel related, and because of the rev counter/oil buzzer assume its to do with the electrics?
12 years ago (car was 12/13 yrs old) it had new distributor coil and iginition module so i guess it could be them again?
Car has had new carb, and was recorded at about the correct CO etc...
The distributr timimg was checked recently, and the advance worked as the revs increased etc
The hall sender is part of the distributor yes? Therefore, if it is the hall sender easdier to replace the whole distributor?
Also, the tapping/clicking noises coming from the distributor relevant?
Car is a 1272cc 1988, so has the fully transistorised ignition, not points.
Any help very much appreciated :) Not sure where to start!
Thanks

Would say 3 or 4.

Possibly coil, or TCI, but I'd re-check earths too.

Thanks, i guess it would be easiest (not cheapest) to replace the distributor (comes with a new hall sender?) TCI and coil then?
Also, does the TCI-H unit have any other names? I found stuff relating to ignition module, ignition amplifier and TCI-H switch, are these all the same?
Thanks

yes. TCi = ignition amp
mine packed up, but it gave different symptoms to yours. rev counter dropped like a stone, car died eventually.
good luck fault finding.

Thanks, probably just replace all the components (price depending!)
Will update soon...

Got new coil, made no difference. The resistance of the primary windings was different to that given in the Haynes manual, is that important?
Primary: Haynes = .6 to .8ohms OLD = 1ohm NEW = 1ohm
Secondary Haynes = 6.8kohm to 8kohm OLD = 3.9kohm NEW 7.5kohm
Waiting on the TCI switch to come into stock.
He couldnt order a distributor without the part number of the current bosch part (presuming because they are engine specific?) Problem is, I dont have bosch one, i have a replacement.
Does anyone with ETKA have a part number i can quote them, so i can order the correct version? MH engine code, 1988 model year. Same for the hall sender apparantly? Might just do the sender, £160 for the distributor...
Thanks
