Title: power steering v belt?
Post by: christomk3gti on 27 April 2013, 11:51
Hi guyz n galz

Started gettin a squeal on my 8v gti agg. Does not squeal at idle. Only while driving. Think it might be power steering v belt.
It can squeal driving straight. Sometimes squeals when turning. Dont think.its tge pump coz its not a whine noise.

Any ideas?

Do v belts slip and cause a squeal? Could it be the fan belt?

Cheers

They definitely squeal as mine squeals like mad for a few minutes when idling and then settles down.

Presuming the belt is identical to the one I just got (but not yet fitted) for my 1.9D, then they're only £3.84 incl. p&p from gsfcarparts.

Chief :)

Why does it not squeal in idle. Even if i rev it and turn the steerin
only does it when the car is moving over 10mph. Still think it cud be a belt?

They normally squeal when at fall lock.

If it only does it when moving I would look at your brake pads.

it should squeak first thing when everything is cold power steering belts are on proparly strained when steering wheel is moved to put more load on the pas pump start it up on cold go lock to lock with steering wheel if squeeling spray some wd40 on the belt if the squek is not there u need a new belt if its only when ur driving look at post above and check brake pad level u could be near metal on pads

Don't spray the belt! It will slip get hot and snap.

It's loose so tighten it up on the tensioner, although you should just replace it.
Title: Re: power steering v belt? hmm water pump pulley?
Post by: christomk3gti on 29 April 2013, 21:21
Brakes are new. Only 6mth old. Big question here. The pulley on the water pump is ribbed. Shud the ribs be deep? Mine looks really worn. Maybe the belts slipping on that pully? Can sumone check therepulley to see if the ribs on their pully for water pump is deep. Cheers

pulley on water pump (6 ribs one) has very tiny grooves... far less than a mm deep.
