I was wondering what any fellow ultimate detailing geeks like myself thought about Claying the car new?
It's not something I've ever done to a brand new car before, but whilst the salesman tried to convince me not to remove (holds stomach to even say it) 'GardX' from the order (included by default). He showed me a MK7 GT that had just arrived untreated, the paint was rough as to the feel...
GardX is not an option to me, I've had it on a BM before and can remember the struggle to get rid of it from the paint. Fair enough if you want an 'ok' looking car and an easy wash...
Everything I've read so far says that the paint is cured long before the car reaches delivery, so there should be no problem claying the car immediately before applying good wax. I'd much prefer to do this than have something like GardX painted over all the contaminants to give a 'smooth feel'...
I'm used to black cars, although going for white this time, so not new to having to clay. But I have to admit I've never done it on a brand new car before, have always waited 6 months... wondered if anyone had any thoughts?

I would do the "plastic bag" test to see how rough the paint feels and go from there.
Claying will be fine on a new car.
One thing I have learnt with white cars is to have a pair of sunglasses ready if it's a sunny day :cool: :cool:

100% yes but ironx the whole car first to remove any fallout and imbedded contaminants that could be in the paint,you'll be surprised what crap you can get out of a new car, after rinsing the ironx off well gently clay the car with an ultra fine clay with plenty of lube.
You'll then be able to refine the finish, wipe it down well and seal it with a durable sealant,wax,ceramic, the choice is yours really.

My Dad bought a new Kia Venga (don't ask) last year. I had to clay that the day he brought it home. It had lots of areas of rough feeling paint. Probably contaminants and fall out picked up in transit. I then applied some SRP with a DA, followed by 2 coats of Collinite with 24 hours between them.

Is 'GardX' standard for your new GTI or is it an after sales trick to fleece you of some more money?
Is this 'GardX' total cr@p? Sounds nasty stuff from how you describe it.
After reading the 'virgins guide' to detailing over the weekend, and watching the Meguiar's - How to Clay vid on YouTube, I'm now convinced the clay bar is the way go. I've already got some lovely Chemical Guys XXX Hardcore Wax to apply afterwards :grin:

It certainly does... I'd not thought about sealant.. I've been a total Meguiar's convert for years now.. so at the moment thinking claying on day one... then Ultimate wax weekly for the first three weeks. This will be the first white car I have ever owned so could be interesting :)
