Title: 16v Gearbox oil drain and refill help
Post by: Godzilla on 25 April 2013, 08:09
Going to change the oil on my 16v gearbox as it has heaps of power to deal with daily as it is mated to a BVR 20vt block!

How do I drain and re-fill the oil on this gearbox and what grade of oil do I need to use to refill it?

Thanks in advance for any help

Is that a standard box mate?

I love the way every one of your posts includes you telling us that you have 20vt power.....

As far as I know Len, looks totally standard?  It is having a new clutch put in soon as it has eaten the one up already and after speaking to Ben he said to put a VR6 clutch in as it will be a straight fit.......Trouble is the gear changes are getting soooo hard when the car is hot, plus after looking under the car earlier I think I have an oil leak from the gearbox

Gavv8......  I just have to remind people just in case they have forgotten

I drained and changed the gearbox oil in my 16v too.  It changed a bit slicker but will change it again soon as I used a basic non synth,  If I recall there is a bolt directly underneath the gearbox which was a right git to get out. I refilled through the speedo cable too. 17mm size bolt

2 litres Redline MT90 is good, also Millers Nanodrive which is apparently better....

I would say 80/90 grade will do the trick all ok.

one of these are handy to crack open to the drain and filler plugs.

When you fill it with new oil make sure the car is level and keep filling it until it starts to trickle out of the filler hole on the front of the gearbox.  It's quite fiddly and i had to adapt an old piece of hose pipe onto the oil bottle spout so that I could pour it in properly from up above the battery.
