Title: Office chairs.
Post by: dubber36 on 24 April 2013, 12:50
My office chair is on it's last legs and I need to buy a new one. It got me to thinking about buying a nice comfy leather car seat and modifying it to fit on my current chair base, rather than just going into Staples and buying an ordinary one.

Has anyone done this or got one. I wonder how comfortable it would be considering that some days I can spend up to 10 hours sat in it.

Lot of hassle

Staples FTW IMO

Not much hassle at all. Just 4 bolts

That's pretty much what I had in mind. I've just found some Sierra Cosworth Recaros not too far away from me.

What I'm wondering tho' is how comfortable would one be to sit in all day?

IKEA is the best place for office chairs, nice and firm, fully adjustable (even the 50 quid ones) and really stylish

Ikea is a 90 mile round trip for me. I can't be bothered with all that.

There's a chair they sell in IKEA that costs about £150, but the important thing is it's rated for 24 hour use.  It also comes with a 10 year warranty, so you're effectively paying £15 a year.  I think it's called the Markus or something.

Cant see a car seat lending intself to be a comfy desk chair. The seating and body position is quite different. Maybe in a living room, but at a work station I'd prefer something intended for the task. A few miles to Ikea sounds easier to me!

That's the one, my mate bought it in black.  He works from home and swears by it.

That's why I asked the question. I know Corba seats make the dugout seats for football stadiums, and I've got a feeling that they make office chairs too, but they'd cost a fortune.

I can't see that a car seat would be too much different to my current chair it terms of comfort/support. All of it's adjustment is in the base, which will be re-used, and the car seat will have the benefit of an adjustable backrest angle too.

you want to know what a car seat is going to be like to sit in for hours.

why dont you drive to ikea, by the time you get there youll proberbly realise that they arent neerly as comfy as office chairs, and they dont really have to correct seating position, buy a chair. then drive back.

or go buy a new album, sit in your car for a hour and listne to it, then order a chair off the internet

Work from home and have a £50 ikea high back office chair bought 4 years ago, can't go wrong and would definitely buy another

Herman Miller chairs are amazing.  Used to have one at a previous job.

Home office currently has their budget chair which is also great.  £300 though.  Worth it if you're a home worker.

Well I've just bought a pair of Sierra Cosworth Recaros, so I'm going to have a go at making my own to see how it goes.

If it's no good, I dare say I'll be able to find another use for it or even sell it on. Whatever, it won't have cost me too much to give it a go.

When you've decided it's not a good idea I'd recommend one of these:

We've got two types of chairs in our office.

http://www.chairoffice.co.uk/prod/824/promotional-mesh-office-chair.aspx
http://www.chairoffice.co.uk/prod/445/vienna-high-back-operator-chair.aspx

Its all developers here, so they are sat in them ~8hrs per day. No complaints at all. We've had them for ~18 months now - and nothing broken/worn at all, they're really solid.

Good chairs are well worth spending the money on.

I looked at the Ikea chairs - and they were all naff. Not a chance they'd be any use for more than 3hrs per day.

Indeed, the IKEA Markus chair my friend has is super comfortable, he uses it for 10+ hours a day with no issues at all.

May as well give it go mate, the recaro office chairs are expensive so might well end up being a bargain!

Those prices are just mad.

I picked them up today. I'm not sure if they are Sierra ones after all. They could well be S2 RS Turbo ones. Even so, they are sooooooooo comfortable. If my Mk2 wasn't so original, I'd figure out a way of fitting them in there, but I'm not. I'm sticking to my original plan and building an office chair.

Good man, even if you change your mind after doing it you could always sell it/them, let us know how you get on. ;)
