Title: camshaft position sensor
Post by: Mcleod on 23 April 2013, 21:22
Hi all

I have a problem with my girlfriends mk4 2.0 8v gti. When driving the car cuts out then comes back to life every couple of feet, i had the car tested and it came back with a fault with the camshaft position sensor.
Might be a stupid question but where is this sensor on this car. I have had a look for it without much luck.

I had a faulty sensor on my Mk3 a few years ago, IIRC the sensor was part of the distributor cap, got no idea if it's the same on a MK4.

I dont have a clue where it is lol, there is a sensor behind the distributor cap but its not attached to it its attached to the engine block. If someone had a picture of where this is located would be a massive help.

There is a sensor on the bottom of the oil pan but i though that would be for the oil and not the camshaft, i though it would be nearer the camshafts then the oil pan.

The camshaft positioning sensor is behind the cam gear, a pain in the arse to get to as belt needs to come off . Mine also needed replacing
