It will be 8 weeks on Thursday since I last drove my Golf R! I have got at least another 8 weeks of not driving it, its torture. I have now resorted to looking at pictures of it. Its a good job its a DSG otherwise it would be longer after having this done to my foot. I am counting the days until I can drive again, I am starting to get bored of playing Battlefield 3 now!! Whats the longest you guys have gone without driving your Golf Gti/R?

You don't need your left foot for driving DSG
Hop to the car and get on with it
-
christ, feel bad for you mate.
don't think there's been a day since owning it when I haven't driven it, or at least cleaned it!
-
What did you do to your foot? That's quite a long recovery time, feel for you
Fortunately I've never had to refrain from driving either through ill health or accident
A few years ago my partner had to lay off driving for 6 weeks after a heart attack.
oops, forgot this one........I wasn't supposed to drive for 6 weeks after having a baby by ceasarean, but only managed to hold off for 4 weeks

I thought that but its illegal to drive a vehicle with a plaster cast on, the hospital handed me piece of paper saying its against the 1988 Road Traffic Act :-(
I had a high arch on my foot as i have something called CMT http://www.muscular-dystrophy.org/about_muscular_dystrophy/conditions/140_charcot-marie-tooth_disease_cmt So they lowered my arch by taking a wedge out, I would like to say it did not hurt after but to be honest I have never experienced pain like it, too say ouch is an understatement.

That does look pretty painful!!
8 weeks without the R would be more painful to me!
The most I've gone is a 2 week holiday.
-
Do you not want to lend it to me to 'keep it warm' while you're incapacitated? I promise I won't rag it too much!

I've got a run about [Fox] because I decided I wanted to keep my R in prime condition by not using it during the worst of the winter. Boy did I miss driving it! Just getting back into using it regularly but still use the Fox for work as I don't like leaving the R parked all day in a car park open to the public. I appreciated it more by not using it every day and when I get in it at the weekends it's like having a new car again
-
Hey pal, it looks like you had an accident with a surgeon and a builder at the same time
That looks nasty and I feel both your pains......in foot and not being able to drive your baby. Have a great recovery and then take her to a racetrack

Sorry to hear that, but I suspect the big toe wont bend no more with that screw. Hope you get better soon and relieve the R of its cob webs.

That's one way to really torture yourself. The fox has got to be one of the worst, and most plasticy nasty cars I've ever driven and I've driven just about everything out there over the past 30 years.
Never understand why anyone would ever buy one.
Longest I've been without driving at all is just over 4 months due to an eye operation. I did really miss driving.
I also park my GTIs up over the winter months so I do regular go without driving one for 3 months at a time.

Snoopy, I've heard a lot of people criticise the Fox but I'm quite happy with mine, yes it's a bit plasticky on the interior but it does what it's supposed to and so far has not missed a beat. It also doesn't look all that bad for a basic car imo. Also the rear parcel shelf is made from pineapples [According to R Hammond] how cool is that

I found it not a nice experience at all to drive run or anything, I was actually really shocked how i found it infact. For my money any of the competition out there is far superior, why anyone would buy one over an I10 for example I don't know, but each to there own. :)

Don't fancy a Hyundai, and are you sure it's superior to a VW? Might look good new and have more kit but how about resale value and build? Also wanted to have another VW so I can get both cars serviced at the same dealer.
Mine wasn't new, it's on a 56 plate but had only done 10400 miles. Only thing that bugs me is the VED is £135 when equivalent small cars are £20 [Obviously down to emissions].

Put it this way. I have family in the trade, some of them are badge snobs so im sure they would have put them down if they could. My local Hyundai and KIA dealer when they opened took on loads of mechanics, the staff has over the past few years been drastically reduced because sadly there is not the work for them. (The cars are selling just not breaking) Loads of the mechanics have been moved to VW and Audi dealers in the group which are desperate for mechanics due to the amount of work  Says it all really.
Most my family have always ran VW/Audi/SEATs for the past 30+ years. Quite a few of my family got sick of problems with them so now run Hyundai and KIAs and non have had any issues in the past 4 years or so of them owning them. I am enjoying the peace and quiet
Well until you get the diehard VW/Audi family members meeting them at a family gathering. Then its car wars
The Fox is a simple little car so is probably one of the most reliable VWs out there. Build quality because of were its assembled is questionable.

Snoopy, I wasn't trying to say that Hyundai's are rubbish, they just don't float my boat.
On the question of build quality of the Fox, [as you know it was made in Brazil] mine is fine. There are no rattles inside, just one thing that's annoying is a small squeak coming from somewhere on the drivers seat frame.
All the mechanicals seem fine [but it's only done 14k miles so I don't know what problems could occur on a higher mileage example]

That looks proper nasty  hope the days & weeks fly by....
