I need to know where I stand with this and the garage who fitted the tyres so here are the facts and events.
So last night I was up Lakeside (and so was Toby I think)...went for a drive up seeing what was going on. On the way back I heard a noise on the motorway from what sounded like my engine bay, thought following my gearbox topic last week it has finally given up the ghost but couldnt pull over as was on m25 so just before the dartford bridge there is a slip road I thought I would pull into. Was with my mate in his car, shouted over and said something was up so I had to pull over head. All the sudden something there was a metal clink sound, my steering went, the car slumped, sparks ensued and I saw my wheel roll off across the motorway....was actually so surreal. I was going about 40mph and dont know how managed to get it into the slip road. My mate went to get my tyre which looked like this while my car was on the ground at front on drivers side.

This is my wheel:

Anyway I rang the AA and had a look at my car while I waited. The brake disc has been ground down flat by the road and no wheel bolts were sheared off so they must have been loose. The AA came and I explained I had new tyres fitted under two weeks ago. I dont drive much apart from the odd cruise around the capital etc. He said have you checked the other wheels, I said no so he proceeded to have a butchers. He said on the back I only had 4 out of 5 wheel nuts and some didnt feel to be nipped up.
I got recovered and now its at home, im down an 18" genuine audi rs6 wheel, a brand new under 200 miles done 224 45 18 inch tyre, a brake disc/pad and my bumper is battered too. Luckily I have recovery and he dropped me home instead of to the nearest petrol station. This is all regardless of the potentially fatal reprocussions.
Anyway, theres the facts. I just kinda wanted some advice on what I should do from here or where I stand. Im not the sort of person to say "lets have a claim up", havent ever done it even but I think me being out of pocket is a bit of a p1sstake.
I have deceided to break my car, the whole thing, all bits are available so anybody wants anything pm me, im going to put up a full list over the next week. I just cant be bothered anymore with this motor so thinking of using money to break and any money from the garage as compensation and buying an r32.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ash man Im totally gutted for you  this too happened with my Mk3 I had brand new wheel and i was driving home from work and BANG my passenger wheel came straight off, luckly i was only doing about 5mph so the disc fell inside of the wheel and i was able to do my 2 bolts that I had left.
In terms of what you can do, simply nothing, what im guessing has happened is they changed your tyres, done the wheels up dropped the car down and forgot to tighten them up, (I have done this myself) luckyly I noticed before something bad happened also every now and then i check my bolts.
The problem you got mate is provening it however dont give up on your car, you have put so much work into it :( Surely its a case of new wheel, new numper & new disc? or is there sump damage?
-
Gutted to hear this mate :undecided:
Unfortunate I haven't a clue about what you could do but im sure there is something.
Hope you can get it sorted pal.
-
Ive been in the same situation before ..well nearly had tyres changed and the idiots never tightened up the bolts !!! Luckily i felt it straight away and torqued them up.
Hate to be a piranha but i very nearly bought some headlights yesterday and coincidently you have the ones i want :D pm me a price bud

Hes not breaking it, hes put too much work into that car to give up now, I love the work he has done and I cant let him
-
Shhhhh i need to get rid of my hideous headlights lol !
-
No way stand for that youd take it back with AA report saying missing nuts. For a start missing nuts prooves they at fault. You could add to this if they say they havnt done anything wrong etc. That why would you tamper with your own risking killing you and others!
Who fitted em?
-
Ive had tyres fitted at a couple of different places and ive always noticed at the bottom of the reciept it says something about checking your wheel nuts after x amount of miles after.dunno if all tyre places have this but i would have a look.

^^^^^this
It will say recheck wheel nuts after approx 50 miles and the garage will not be held responsible
If they had been fitted yesterday then you'd have a case. The fact they were fitted two weeks ago means you'll have a tough time proving the garage is at fault
Main thing is you're in one piece!
-
But wheel dropped off and missing nuts. That all abit like non veen torqued up.

Totally but the garage will have the disclaimer on the bottom of the invoice stating that the owner must recheck the bolts after a certain mileage

add in the time scale they could say someone had tried robbing ya wheels but were disturbed - I know this to my cost :lipsrsealed:

A local tyre place, the thing is the guy is into his dubs and has an amazing mk2 so I thought yeah il go with a fellow dubber and look what happens. I didnt even get a receipt and they didnt tell me to check them at all. I know they would need retorquing but I work in town so I dont drive in the week and this is the first time I have been on motorway.
Im going to get some legal advice tomorrow because I cant see how this is my fault. I dont know if I could even go through insurance at all?
I am breaking it though, I have umm'd and ahhh'd about it for ages but this has just made me not trust it anymore, plus It still needs cosmetic work which is bucks and I just want one that hasnt been tampered with like an r32, I will miss the engine (could even transfer it - stop it Ash) but they come with the genuine bumpers painted etc.
-
Gutted for you mate had a similar experience a few years back
-
Aye, doubt you'll be able to hold the garage responsible now. They could argue you removed the wheels since and didn't tighten them. Their word against yours.
Glad you're ok though!
-
I didnt even get a receipt and they didnt tell me to check them at all.
why didnt you get a reciept he can deny you were even there
-
Gutted for you
Same thing happened to me when I had a ford lucky for me I h
Was only doing 20 mph when my wheel front wheel went past me as I was stopping to see what the noise was.
On other note if your serious abut breaking how much for bumper and exhaust
-
Its actually b0llocks mate,im going to still ring about legal advice tomorrow.
Anybody that wants bits pm me with an offer. Please make them sensible as I have a little diesal fiesta so Im not in a rush to sell for stupid money, its my pride and joy, I have spent years building it, its still my first car and im not going to sell for pennies...just saying
-
doubt theres anything you can do your ment to check wheel bolts after 30 miles every time you have a wheel off.
as for there being bolts missing, ide put it down to loosing them when the wheel came off/loosing them when driving and them coming loose.
-
This is bad news. All my fav projects are ending badly.
-
ASH!!!! transfer the engine into a Mk2

This is not how I thought it would end but to be honest I just dont have the time and I cant justify keep spending money on it, if I can get a decent amount from breaking it, sell my fiesta and end up with something that has good bodywork with a few luxuries il be happy, the grief of breaking it is daunting but I just need to get it done and move on, love hate relationship with it since day one and I think once its gone and i have something else i will miss it but a weight will be lifted. Dont want a "project" car anymore, just want one that is smart, is quick enough (250 brake-ish) and that I dont HAVE to do much to just a few little touches.
Sounds like im pretty funked regarding the garage, im going to have a word with them and see what they say
-
Gutted mate!! It would be hard to get the garage to pay out because of the timescale and as said when you buy tyres they say its the drivers responsibility to check the tightness of wheel bolts after 30 miles but who does?! I would go see the owner with the mk2 and tell him what happened. Try get him to pay for the damage, don't scrap they car! I have a black bumper if you want FOC
-
Doubt you get far tbh, as Chuff said someone could have tried to nick you wheels.
-
Gutted for you mate!! but as said I think your goosed in terms of legal route!
-
Surely it's down to the driver to keep a check on the wheel nut torque as you would with air in the tyre. I mean its a rubbish thing to happen and I would also try to get some compo from them but I highly doubt it :undecided:
-
What place did the tyres for you.
-
Wasn't me who was there!
Gutted for you mate!! Looks horrible! Things could have been a lot worse if you was going 50+
Like what the others said about the receipt! And 2 weeks ago inputs quite hard! Well worth a try! Such a shame!
I know what you mean about something that you won't tinker with!
