Hi all. Have ordered keyless entry (with the engine start button) for the GTD, and have a couple of questions please, having never had KESSY before.
1. Are the keys identical to the non keyless entry ones, I.e. do they still have a folding key blade ?
2. As I understand it, the car automatically unlocks when you are quite close (say 1-2 feet away). Is it possible to unlock it further away the same as a normal system by pressing an unlock button on the fob as normal. This would be useful when I want to let the wife say go to the boot when the cars parked up my drive, next to the house but the keys inside ?
3. Would you still be able to use the fob to lower all the windows (or put them up) in the rare event we have a really hot summers day ?
Thanks

All good questions Mr Norbreck, and here's another I'd like to add:
Can you just open the boot with keyless entry? I use this feature a lot whilst out shopping when I just need to dump something in the boot but not enter the car.
Norbreck, I guess you read this post anout keyless and diesels too?

This video will answer a couple of your questions:

Yes the the key is still the same as a normal one, ie still has the flip out blade just in case of battery failure so you can still open the doors with the lock hidden under the door handle.

And yes it still has the buttons so will still work like your current key to lock/unlock.

Thanks so much Mr Jimble. Where/how do you find all this reference?
That rather cheesy YouTube clip sums up the keyless system perfectly. Glad I added it to my spec last week.

Your welcome, far too much time on my hands i suppose!
The cheesy one was what sold me on it too tbh, i dropped the overpriced winter pack for it which would only get used a few times a year and added something that'll get used every day.

Couldn't agree more. I think keyless entry adds an extra notch of class to the car and a nod to the segment class above. As you rightly say it will be used each and every day for the life of the car. Neat

Thanks guys, put my mind at rest that it was the right decision to spec it.

I second that :)
I personally don't think VW explain in enough detail what each optional extra offers. Lots of people enjoy reading/seeing detailed information to help inform them of whether they'd like the option of not. Imagine if VW had a link to a video or longer salesy piece of copy which really sell the benefit to the customer. They'd sell a whole lot more optional extras I can tell you (marketing background you see).

To be fair to them, their technical glossary isn't too bad, it explains most things better than the brochures.

That's fair enough - I like my detail. Cheers for the heads up, really useful link

One thing still confuses me after watching the YouTube video. To lock the car, you have to touch the "dimple"? So how does the car not simply unlock again if you're still standing in close proximity? Or does it recognise that as you walk away, the key fob moves out of range and then the lock engages. If that's the case, what's the range?

According to the link Jimble posted -- VW say its 1.5 meters away.
-
Thanks. That makes sense.
-
The car doesn't unlock/lock automatically depending on how close you are, it requires an interaction, ie it only unlocks when the key is in range AND you put your hand on/in the handle and only locks when you touch the dimple or press the button on the key, if it was completely 'hands free' and locked as you walk away i don't think trust it as much! :undecided:
-
Agreed - the operation you describe makes much more sense. I'm looking forward to experiencing the dimple
-
It does look pretty cool - I have already removed Winter Pack from my car, so I am thinking also that this would be nice to have on the car, get daily usage etc.
Just thinking of those times when you have your hands full of bags and you have to put them all down to get your key out - this option is genuinely beneficial.
Will see if I can add it on tomorrow - think dealer is getting peeved with me keep adding and removing options though.
-
It's your car not theirs, so get it how you want it and stuff the dealer
-
One more question please. With the keyless system and the start / Stop button being quite prominent on the centre console (near the flap for the media in socket), is it possible when driving for example, if someone (or something) accidentally gets dropped on the switch whilst driving, does the engine cut out or is the system smart enough to kill the switch function whilst the car is moving to prevent a possible accident ?
-
Or worse still, a careless passenger assumes the button controls music playback!
-
I would assume the start/stop button is disabled when the car is in motion. I don't think you can switch off the normal key ignition unless stationary either, but I've never tried though!
