Title: Woulda quite liked the sat nav..
Post by: carotino on 19 April 2013, 19:40
But single cd payer in the glovebox is as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Will a six disc changer be possible retro fitted?

6  CD changer is a bit OTT really, I hardly use it and won't miss it.

I'd just copy all the music to an SD card or usb stick in lossless format, sorted!

Forgotten what a cd looks like

Get yourself an iPod or sd card/USB stick as others have said.

To be fair, it is quite possible for people to not want to use an SD card or ipod.  Both of those options are potentially complex and expensive ones that basically require a fairly significant change to the way you use your music.  Copying many CDs over to a £100+ ipod is a pain when you think 'why can't I just use my CDs?'  An SD card has similar problems and I was recently forced to spend extra to get all my itunes music converted to non-DRM files because everything older than a certain date would just not play from an SD card otherwise.  From the sound of things you won't get album artwork up if its not in MP3 format, so I'll have to reconvert everything from AAC to MP3 at some point too.

Needless to say if you have the CD in your hand this all sounds like an avoidable waste of time and money.  Now, if the CD is in the glovebox that is also annoying.  So while personally I'm going for the SatNav and will use SD cards I can understand why the OP is disappointed.

To be fair, I do know a lot of people who still have glove boxes full of CDs.  But, these people also tend to have older cars as well.

However, I think things are sufficiently established in the world of MP3 that people should just move with the times.  Digital music is so accessible, and with software like "Easy CD-DA Extractor", ripping CDs, converting between formats, and removing DRM is a doddle.  I bought a 32GB SD card recently and it cost something like £16.  Most people use laptops these days, and most laptops have an SD card slot, so copying music around is simple too.

Plus an SD card is a fiver - no clogging up your glove box with cd's that you never listen to, copy it all onto the card (if you don't have an MP3 player) then happy days!

I only recently discovered that my Scirocco has a 6 disc changer, I've never used the CD player, ever.

You say you would have liked the sat nav, but don't want a single CD player in the glove box.  Does the standard stereo not have the single CD player in the glove box regardless?  I don't think ordering sat nav makes any difference.

Yes, for the UK at least, all of the MK7 platform infotainment units utilize a CD / DVD drive that is glove box mounted (even the Nav versions). No versions (for the UK) have a CD / DVD slot on the head unit itself.  The part that most people think from photographs is a CD slot in the fascia, is actually the infra-red proximity bar that detects the hand movement towards the unit.

In fact the touch screen unit in the dash is just that (with nothing behind it), see below. All the electronics, amp, tuner CD drive etc are in the unit contained in the glovebox.

Norbreck, do you know where the iPhone/mp3 lead will be?  In the middle armrest console as per previous versions?

It's in the little section behind the gear stick.  It's quite handy as you can cover your iPhone/iPod by closing the cover and the surface has a rubber lining to stop it moving about too much.

From what I've seen it look like it is in the little compartment that flips up at the bottom of the dash, in front of the gear stick.

Excellent stuff, thanks chaps.  That's a much better place than on the previous golf, nice and easy.  Now we just have to hope they provide the lead/lightning adapter in time

That's very interesting about the fascia bit being just that.
Wonder how long til some clever person works out how to run the bigger (pro) screen with the lesser spec discovery nav until connected? hmmmm...
