Do you think he's asking too much
Advice would be appreciated

i like the black one better
-
black one pal, though if you wanna go for reliability then the silver one would of been looked at as per its write up
the black one does sound and look like light modding has been done though :undecided:
i'd personally go silver as you got some winter comfort and the seats look top
-
black one defo...silver is so common..
-
and the silver looks like a AUM so Ko3s turbo
-
black one seems to be agood buy , but silver ones not in my opinion, theres plenty like that for sale and cheaper m8.
-
and the silver looks like a AUM so Ko3s turbo
Aum's are 2001 onward I think and that says 2000 so prob a AGU
-
For me it'd be the silver one without any question.
-
and the silver looks like a AUM so Ko3s turbo
Aum's are 2001 onward I think and that says 2000 so prob a AGU
its not drive by wire though? and depends on what time of year surely, to me it sounds like it came out closer to autum as car sales persons would be leaning more on bad weather experience to sell upgrades, mine was registered in april'01 but the bloke placed his order in aug'00 and he splashed out on leathers electronic heating climatronic, full size rear wheel, not sure about this ASR thing though
plus the silver has all its stamps and looks looked after
-
+1 for silver
-

Yeah good point mate cant be a AGU then
-
I would not even go near the black one just because those reae lights  get a bog standard one mate do your own mods. And go for one with full history.
-
sorry I'd go black mate
-
sorry I'd go black mate
 u want to rephrase that  :lipsrsealed:
-
Just to expand on what I said earlier, the silver one looks to be the better car to me. I'd only buy a standard car and as others have mentioned the black one is lightly modded but not in a good way, chrome mirrors and rear lights scream chav. The silver one is a higher spec, headlight washers means winter pack.
I think the thing that would swing it for me would be comparing the two engine bays, how long does it take to wipe down the engine cover and give it a tidy up?
The black car looks uncared for despite the service history that's with it, which doesn't actually mean anything. I know people who work for VW as technicians that I wouldn't trust to do an oil change, let alone a cambelt.

The only thing the black one has going for it is that it's a 3 door.
-
sorry I'd go black mate
 u want to rephrase that  :lipsrsealed:

Hahaha ok i' would of gone for the black golf
is that better
-
once you go black, theres no going back :lipsrsealed:
and anyways when the listing for the black gti says it has a "pile" of reciepts for work carried out then that should be a clue as to its general cost effectiveness since ownership, and theres a reason for it selling that cheap as well
-
the agu is the better engine
-
but look at the state of it, Dean wanted a vehicle that isnt gonna cause him hassle as i believe so my money would be on the silver, granted AGU is a better engine, Dean will always have the choice of engine swaps as well
-
I would go for the silver. It looks like its a ARZ engine
-
Are these the only two golf mk4s for sale on the planet to choose from then  get on autotrader and search non modded clean mk4. Dealer history and you cant go wrong

+1
-
Obviously these are not the only two cars available but what I'm trying to say is....
Do I go for older car with low mileage or newer car with higher mileage .
I'm trying to be as careful as I can as I want a car that's been well looked after and has no problems
-
those lights in that black 1 are shocking
-
at the end of the day the pal there really is no telling how a car is going to behave unless you forge the parts yourself, i'd say anything with less than 2 owners, full service history with a high percentage of dealership stamps, MOTs with nothing but advisories, full reciepts of work carried out, examination of break down kit, you know when somethings been used more than once, HPI check, and type of previous owners.
mine had one from new but after i bought i soon discovered his son used the vehicle alot and did some backyard modding that has left lasting issues which i have just only rectified after 2 yrs ownership, its down to how you have examined the car, i would take Nino with as well mate to be on the safe side and hes got my number if theres any questions he cant think of the answer for and i work with another Dub maniac who has owned Dubs since the 1982 Gti so you can imagine he has that crazed look in his eye
-

dealers are f**king hopeless so dealer history means f-all

have a look at this one
-
 at people who think "Dealer history" is absolute gold.
True, it will sell better to other who seem to think that way but honestly, I've seen "dealers" that have literally topped the screenwash up and changed two bulbs. Oil and filter still exactly the same along with the air and fuel filters. Straight into a technicians toolbox after investigation.
-
this is true bud but it also shows that the OWNER of the vehicle always intended the vehicle to recieve best possible service, its not the owners fault if VW are slack on servicing, the intention by the stamps is to ensure the vehicle has been looked after correctly
-

dealers cant look after your car they are hopeless

i know what you mean, service last week by a local VAG specialist showed that when i actually took it to the VW dealers for an oil change that they cross threaded the sump plug, couldnt figure out why it wasnt sitting properly and decided to fit two washes to tighten it up  photos were taken and im awaiting for VW's reply
-
After a bit of thinking I've decided to go with the black one.
Or would it be better to look for a newer one ?
Problem is though, at my budget of 1600 it will be hard to find a 2001-2002 with low miles at this price.
-
low mileage doesnt automatically mean brilliant engine, so be careful mate, i still think the silver one would be a better choice and before you buy please please PLEASE! check the reciepts and service bills for work carried out!
-
I partially agree with what your saying mate but the other car has over 40k more miles. So that's a lot more abuse it COULD have gone through.
The way I've been ripped off with cars recently I'm wary as to what I'm buying. I did ask the guy if he would hold the silver one for me until the end of the month but wouldn't without £200 deposit. As I havnt got that money it will have to go. So my next option is the black golf. As all others are ridiculous prices for what they are offering
-
thats cool mate and if any issues arise please come and post them on this sight as they could be minor and cost less than you think pal, especially after the fiasco with your last motor, just remember to check everything mentioned
-
Dean see if the guy with the black one will bring it down an ill scan it ;)
-
Dean see if the guy with the black one will bring it down an ill scan it ;)
you do what to a black what?! :lipsrsealed:
-
Lower mileage may mean all the common faults are there waiting to go wrong...
-
Oh boy, this is becoming a right pain in the sphincter :undecided:
I don't know whether to go for low mileage, high mileage, newer cars, older cars or any other cars in that case lol.
I am looking around everywhere and what I see to be good cars are bags of sh!te.
The guy with the black golf reckons that around town he averages 25 mpg at best and obviously less when putting foot down.
What could be the problem as the car is standard with no mods
-
sounds about right, why dont a few of us have a look about for you lol whats your max?

are you saying my mate said he would keep the car for you
-
Yes he did, and closer to the time we were going to arrange possibly meeting half way. He said he wasn't in a rush to sell and hasn't advertised it anywhere else. So I was expecting him to keep it. Yet another let down
