Title: What Else Needed?

Shocks with a shorter piston rod to ensure you don't punch any unwanted holes in your bonnet, shorter bumpstops, new strut mounts all round and a decent camber/tracking setup afterwards. Think that should be it.

is it not just a case of swapping the springs then?

Nah the rod down the middle of the standard shocks will start to hit the end of the shock if it is lowered that much. eventually it will punch its way through and up into your bonnet. I think you can get away with a 40mm drop with standard shocks but again it's not advisable as the shocks aren't operating in the area of travel they were designed for. Shorter bump stops would be required otherwise you would possibly 'bottom out' the suspension quite frequently.

ohh and another thing...
if you lower more than 40mm on standard shocks then they will have a short life

Ive seen mk2's dropped 80mm using standard shocks. never seen any holes in bonnets before. think your ok

Sorry for the confusion.
Blue had the people who had lowered 80mm on standard shocks changed the bump stops??? The whole point of a bump stop is to stop the shock travelling too far and destroying itself. Therefore it doesn't matter how low you go on a standard shock if it has the original bump stop the rod will never protrude from the top. You would however frequently bottom out the suspension when carrying passengers or on bumpy roads. This would quickly lead to the demise of your strut mounts.
I'm sure if you lowered 60-80mm AND fitted shorter bump stops on standard shocks then you be in for trouble.

I think the answer capoot is you could probably use the original shocks but they wont last long. If your suspension is coming off anyway you might aswell fit some suitable shocks at the same time as the springs.

std GTI shocks should cope ok with a 40mm drop, but if you haven't got GTI shocks you're best off upgrading them otherwise they wont last long.  Also remember that lowering kits quote the drop for a standard MK2.

so for example if a GTI is 20mm lower than a Driver, a 40mm drop kit will only lower the GTI by 20mm.  But on a Driver it will lower the car by 40mm.  Confused yet?

Thing is, if you're stripping the suspension down it's false economy not to at least replace the top mounts & bump stops, as they're most likely to be worn and you don't want to have to strip it down AGAIN soon after

OK....here goes...

This is what i did on my first golf..not saying its right but it worked for me.... it had standard springs and dampers, i had a mate who had some 40mm lowering springs we installed these. It blow one of the dampers as it was old and couldnt take the extra abuse.. If money is a problem. do the same as i did... get some 40mm lowering springs.. if it blows a damper, hey at GSF there only like 30 quid.. just replace a pair.

Learn from ya experiences!

Good luck!
