Ok I'm stuck in the side of the road, my mk2 gti 8v pb was driving fine, I went to reverse park fine, now I can't get it out of reverse so I'm stuck, I have a weighted shift rod, all the white plastic connectors are fine, the only thing that seems to be missing is where the weighted rod goes into the bar the rubber geometry thing has gone? Would this cause it to be stuck? When I take the rod out I can freely move everything
Any help??

Rock the car backwards and forwards with the clutch engaged.

Happened to me once with the old gearbox. I disconnected the plastic linkages - then had to persuade the selector arm with a hammer.
It took a few blows to get it out of gear!

I know this was a while ago now but to answer your question, yes the rubber bush is probably the most important part as without the horizontal rod being located very exactly so you will not be able to get various gears dependent upon position of the rod. hope this helped
